My CRT Bros...

I am in a state of absolute desperation here...

I submitted my paperwork to a lawyer to get a fiancee visa for my fiancee from Costa Rica in October.

They dragged their fee and it didn't actually get filed until January 19th.

I just got petition approval from the US Citizenship & Immigration Service on April 26.

My lawyer now says that it will take 6 months to actually get an interview for her at the U.S. Embassy in CR... She originally told me in the initial consultation that the whole process would take, on average, 3 months.

Someone help!! I don't know what to do and I am already well past patience's end. Ahs anyone gone through this process? does it really take another 6 months just for getting an interview? Is there ANYTHING I'm doing wrong or that I can do to expedite this??? If anyone has gone through this and can help me out, please pm me your number so that we can talk.

Any information would be great!

thanks

ruffnutz

I've never weathered this process, but my first thought is, "How close are you with your congressman?" I've seen my congressman pull a few strings to help expedite the immigration process for constituents with relatives in foreign countries.

It may not help in your case, but it's worth a shot. Get a hold of your congressional office, and let the chips fall where they may. What do you have to lose? (It may end up costing you a ticket or two for a re-election fundraiser.)

Good luck...

Ruff,
I am no expert but I have done a bit of research on this subject, and at this point, there is not much you can do. Once the process has begun, it's almost impossible to reverse without screwing up future applications.

Everybody who has given me advice on the subject always says not to pay anybody to do the work for you. Yes, the whole process is extensive, and annoying, but there's really nothing a lawyer or immigration expert can do for you that you cannot yourself do.

These guys that charge up to a few thousand dollars do not give you a better chance or quicker approval, in fact, as evidenced by Ruffnutz's case may take longer. Once your fiance has sent the forms to the consulate and takes her medical, it's about a month for the interview, not 6 months. The whole process, from the time the forms are sent to the time the visa is approved shouldn't take longer than 7-8 months, much shorter in many cases since the embassy in CR has a history of quick turnaround on their processing. (Obviously, they haven't yet adapted to the Tico way of life. )

Ruff,
I guess if you read the board you would have learned a few things:
1. There are people here who have been in your shoes and could have helped you.
2. YOU DON'T NEED A LAWYER.

Now that the paperwork is "in the system" (somewhere) all you can do is wait.

Good luck.

Guys,

Thanks for the pm's and phone numbers, I will be calling soon.

Let the be a cautionary tale to all who read this...

As some have said on this thread, getting a lawyer does NOT help expedite the process (as I mistakenly thought), but will actually delay it more. I had a buddy get this all done and over with in three months total. I'm already at month #8 and have to wait some more.

Looks like Ruffnutz isn't the only one pissed about the Embassy's lost/slow processing of paperwork.

I took a girl there when I came to C.R. nine years ago. > The thing I remember most was the guy who made the decision was behind bullet proof glass. It looked like a drive thru window at a bank.
