"'Wellness' center a brothel, cops say
By CHRISTINA DENARDO
The Palm Beach Post

DELRAY BEACH --
Police charged a woman early Sunday with running a brothel out of a Federal Highway storefront and arrested employees on felony charges of prostitution, racketeering and money laundering.

The operator of Priv'e Gentlemen's Wellness, Jennifer Aquilar of West Palm Beach, apparently opened the business this year under the guise of a spa, according to police. Three employees, Esther Alfonso, 36; Marta Carrera, 34; and Anjela Throckmorton, 37, face charges of engaging in prostitution and unlawful practice of a healthcare profession.

Aquilar, 29, previously was arrested on charges of misdemeanor larceny and possession of cocaine, which were dismissed.

State corporate records list the owner of the business as Royal Prestige of Palm Beach, a Coral Springs-based business whose president is Aquilar and vice president is Zsolt Rado. Neither could be reached for comment Sunday.

Located on Federal Highway north of Linton Boulevard, the storefront advertised acupuncture, massage and manicures. But the business, whose name means private in French, chose not to advertise online or in the phone book.

Employees of other businesses in the strip mall said Priv'e often stayed open well after its posted closing hours and attracted many older men in fancy cars. The staff often wore provocative clothing.

''We weren't surprised,'' said Justin Cheney, who works at a nearby liquor store. ``We had our suspicions. A lot of times they would have the open sign on, but the door was locked.''

One time Cheney asked one of the women if she gave massages. The woman's response: No.

Aquilar was released Sunday on $24,000 bond. Alfonso and Carrera could not post their $24,250 bail and remained in the Palm Beach County Jail. Throckmorton, charged with seven prostitution counts, also remained in jail. Her bail was set at $43,750.

Police did not arrest any Priv'e customers, but Delray Beach police spokesman Jeff Messer said investigators are still working on the case."

I live ten minutes from that location here in Delray Beach. That's about the third or fourth such business to be raided and shut down along Federal Highway between Boca and Boynton in the last few years. I knew of the others while they were still up and running, but never heard of this particular joint. What a difference a letter makes, huh??? (Delray vs. Delrey!)

There was a Boca joint busted 2 years ago and a guy I knew ended up with his name published as a client in the Boca Raton News - the place had been under surveillance for a while and they had video of his car - wasn't fun.

Sounds like the typical Korean massage parlors we have here in the northeast. Federal and state authorities seem to be cracking down on them lately. Much of the crackdown has to do with supposed "sex slavery."

$43,000 for bail for prosti-fuckin-tution. That means the poor girl would have had to post 10 percent...over four thousand dollars out of her pocket, and she hasn't even faced trial yet.

Lawyers here, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the reason for bail was to allow someone to prepare a defense for himself. Bail itself was never intended to be punitive. So what's with over forty-three grand for what is almost universally accepted as a non-violent and (arguably) victimless crime?

Glad I don't live in Florida. :)

When, when, when are we going to rein in this ridiculous, fascist police state?
