Post subject:  Anyone Got an Answer to the Hair Problem ???
Ok it could just be me ..well US because my wife complains about the same thing every trip to SJO..

After about day 3 or 4 the water starts making your hair feel flat and very heavy like its not clean, I mean after you shampoo in the shower and it dries your hair feels like you havent washed it in a week, each day it gets heavier and heavier too..by the end of a 2 week stay you just give up on a nice soft hair style....any suggestions what to do to fight the build up of whats in the water doing it?
and its the same at all the Hotels we have stayed at.
I know it sounds lame but hey we like the feeling of clean soft hair !

Have to agree with the feeling clean issue, my 1st trip, brought a cheap carry on size (mistake)...Since my 2nd trip I bring down my normal everyday shampoo, Nexus..eliminated that problem...How is the water pressure where you stay ?? I usually stay at SL (new wing) or Amon both have excellent pressure

I have stayed at Amon Plaza 2 weeks there as well.
spent 2 weeks at Zona Blue with Great water pressure there as well same problem..I think its like heavy Iron in the water or something

Skynard,

Do you and your wife bring your regular home shampoo? If not, it could be the shitty shampoo provided by the hotel. I might be wrong, but the water quality in San Jose is as good as I have ever experienced. Therefore, I don't think the water is the problem.

However, many years ago, I traveled throughout Mexico with a spanish class. Many areas of Mexico have really bad water. Some of the girls im my class would buy distilled water at the mercado and use a liter of it for a final rinse. They claimed that it helped. You might give that a whirl.

This is not an un-common problem. Many / most of the hotels have city water, just like in the states. But I doubt that they have much, when it comes to a filtration and/or softener system. The water is probably "harder" than you and your wife are used to.

My first few trips, I had the same feeling about the water. Then I tried something different, and it worked. Now, when I shower in CR, I'll wash my hair with soap (Irish Spring - Aloe) first. Rinse it out, then wash it with my regular shampoo. It seems to do the trick.

But then again, I also use Paul Mitchell "Freeze & Shine" spritz in my hair, and it's wind-tunnel tested! :shock: This may not work for you.

IMHO, if all else fails, just ask GetRhythm for his hairdresser's name! :P

Sounds like a hard water issue, now that you mention it, it does seem hard to get soap to lather up quickly in SJO (which is a simple hard H2o test). Bring some good conditioner or maybe a hot-oil treatment after a week would help or you could try a vinegar/lemon juice rinse... http://chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com/hardwater.htm

"You need water to shampoo your hair and hard water makes it harder to wash your hair. Each hair shaft is made up of little scales, like shingles on a roof. Hard water tends to make the scales stand up, which makes your hair feel rough and tangly. Since your hair is tangled and rough, it is more difficult to rinse out all of the soap. Soap is less effective in very hard water because its reacts with the excess minerals to form calcium or magnesium salts. These are not easily soluble in water and can result in soap film. Washing hair in soft water will have a different result because it leaves fewer insoluble deposits on the hair. "

If your water is very hard you can use a weak acid rinse, like vinegar or lemon juice. The acid makes the scales lie down flat, and again allows the soap to be rinsed more easily. Please read our information on Natural Vinegar Rinses.

I actually am a chemist. The hard water prevents the shampoos, soaps and body washes to perform as they were intended to in the US since the labs that develop these products use deionized or distilled water when developing these products. It's called the "common ion" situation since hard water is loaded with ions.

Easy fix: buy a gallon of distilled water and use this water as a final rinse in the shower. Problem over!

Sorry, but I have to say this....

This thread sounds like it belongs in a different website...

Solve your hair problems, use a razor or a trimmer... #3 works real well for me...

Any answers other than that belong somewhere on cosmo's website... ;)
