There Will Be A Zapote Fair This Year, Assured San José Mayor
Not to repeat the fiasco of last December, San José mayor, Johnny Araya, said last night that the end of year Zapote festival will be held in zapote as it has been done in the past and will be oragnized by the municipality.

Last December, the annual fair was mired in controversy over health and security issues and an appeal put a hold left thousdands of fair goers without a fair.

"With the objective of keeping the tradition of the popular fair in San José and to avoid repeating the scandal of last year with the Comisión de Festejos Populares, this year the fair will organized by the municipality", said Araya.

The mayor said the municipality will co-ordinate with the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) and members of the Ministerio de Salud (health ministry) so that the fair complies with all safety and health regulations, issues that provoked a Constitutional Court filing last year and stopped the annual fair.

The mayor also said that a concert will be held on December 31 at the Parque Central to ring in the new year, which Araya says will hopefully become an annual tradition.

"We want to resume the fair and its tradition, some of which have been lost", said Araya.

Araya added that the tradition of the bulls will also be resumed, though did not provide details if the bullring would be operate by private enterprise under concession or by the municipality.

The annual Zapote fair traditional begins on Christmas day and runs into the first week of January.
