Post subject:  Why most who were detained at the HDR were released

This morning Inside Costa Rica published an article about marriages of convenience. 110 people were detained in last weeks raid at the HDR. 105 then were able to produce documentation proving they are legally married to Ticos.

Immigration Detects More Than 100 Marriages of Convenience
An unknown number of foreigners contract a marriage of convenience to obtain their legal residence and citizenship in Costa Rica.

Immigration officials know this practice exists, however, have their hands and can only act when there is overwhelming evidence.

The case in point is the detention of 110 foreigners detained in last weeks raid on a downtown hotel and casino who worked in the sex trade.

105 of the detained were later released when they are able to provide documents showing their marriage to a Costa Rican, though in the majority of the cases the women did not know the name of their spouse without having to check the document.

Only five of the detained were found to be illegal in the country, who will be deported to their country of origin this week, according to immigration director, Mario Zamora.

According to immigration records the foreigners were from the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Nicaragua. Immigration officials say that one American national was among the group detained during the raid.

"We have to find a mechanism to close this opening. The problem is that the problem keeps growing", said director Zamora.

This is not the first time that a large number of foreigners have been detained in a raid and later released because can prove their legal status by way of marriage.

During the last six months immigration officials have raided a number of locales in Jacó and in San José, including the area around the bar known as Tierra Dominican, in downtown San José, where a large number of Dominicans gather.

In total 540 foreigners have been detained in the raid, of which only three were deported. A total of 340 were married to Costa Ricans.

"The majority of those entered the country illegally and the legalized their status by way of contracting marriage", said Zamora.

Zamora added that he fears that many of the women are being exploited sexually by international groups, where the women are moved around from country to country and under a strict code of silence.

"It is feasible that some of these women are her under duress, forced to sex slavery", said Mario Zamora.

The immigration director said that they only action the immigration service can take is to closely look at each document and in the event they detect any irregularities in the document or errors in the process to obtain their legal residence by way of marriage, their residence will be annulled.

Surprising how common this is, a few weeks ago Dapanz's potential date said she was married to a Tico for 300.00 and had never met him.

If you are bangin' a Colombiana, the chances she is married are about 80% or better. This is my estimation. Yes, my trophy Colombiana was married to a Tico that she has never met. It is a 2 year deal.

If the Colombianas are all part of an organized something, that would explain their pricing.
As we sit around saying amongst ourselves..."no cien..no cien" ---they, as a group are saying "cien..cien". And on any given day...their group is bigger.

So 110 people were detained and only 5 were illegal? Think of all the manpower that took - yet it is not safe to walk 3 blocks in SJ at night.

Whoa, they took 110 chicas out of the DR at once? I've seen it packed in there but nothing like 110 chicas I don' think. As for marriage of convienience - yeah, that's how most of the Colombians get residency.
My former favorita (haven't seen her around, I think she married a gringo) told me it cost her $500 to marry some old guy that she never actually saw. There are Ticos that broker that stuff, the chicas refer the new ones. FWIW

I don't think this has anything to do with it. These girls are very clear on the profile that they are looking for:

1) Guys on vacation that don't know any better.

2) No CRT guys that do know better.

They are very focused on doing the 3 to 4 trick night at a $100 a pop and guys that don't fit the profile are a waste of their time. They have the looks to get what they want and they leave all the bargin hunters like us the second tier girls.

Maybe if you base it on silicone. If you consider fair pricing , good attitude , and better overall experience then these girls are second tier and the ones that most of us do business with are first tier IMHO.

In the long run I think they make things better for us. The second tier girls are clearly intimidated by them so they work a lot harder.

These 'raids' happen regularly, and we can assume that the 'authorities' know in advance they are going to detain 100 and prosecute 5. My obvious conclusion is that it's for show, publicity.

On the unrelated topic of Colombianas who demand cien: All the girls in the Del Rey want as much as they think they can get. I have favoritas who charge me 40 and are looking for 100 from the Del Rey fish. If they can hook one at 100, they would be rather stupid to say 'no, I'm only worth 50' wouldn't they? But I think this deserves it's own topic...

i can see 110 chicas, counting the DRH, MB & KL
but 110 non-ticas?
i assume a reasonable assumption is that ticas make up 1/3 or more,
that would mean there were over 150 chicas,
of which 100 or so had foreign passports

i suppose some produced documentation with a picture of ben f

I'm surprised no one picked up on this part of the story. Here is yet another example of the twisted rhetoric one so often hears against the sex industry. If these women are here under duress and forced to sex slavery, I'd think they'd be relieved to be picked up in a raid. Then they could simply say, "Yeah, you're right. I don't really belong here. I don't want to be here. Go ahead and send me home." What this guy is saying is totally absurd. These girls chose to come here and choose to stay here. Sure, they may have contracted with some illegal people smuggling operation that demands they ask cien and then takes a huge part of that as their cut to pay off their inflated fees for getting them here. Or they may just be independents, who use part of their earnings to pay some Tico $300 for his name on a marriage contract or $3000 to some Colombian Mafioso for smuggling them into the country. But how long do you think it takes to pay that off when they're getting as often as not $100/pop for sexo with some prostitonto? No, these gals come to CR for the allure of big money at the HDR/BM and they're fully aware what that means they'll have to do once they get here.

Couldn't agree more Shawn. As a whole, the attitude just lacks.

Pro good point, I think that Mr. Zamora's comments would be relative to the Asian trade in such U.S. cities as LA, MIA,DAL,CHI, etc. But not here in CR, the women have to much freedom to move about, where the Asians actually hold them against their will.

Wow I guess I like screwing married women more than I realized :D ! I just don't believe this being held against their will crap at least in CR. The Latinas I have come to know just simply do not show any signs of this at all from my read anyway.
