Interesting read in today's edition of Inside Costa Rica. More proof that it's very important to make sure your chica is of legal age:

Costa Rica Declared "Slave Zone"
Although it cannot be seen at first sight, Costa Rica has been declared a "slave zone", according to a report by Telenoticias, that goes on to say that many of the prostitutes in Costa Rica are foreigners and the majority are here practically as slaves.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says that some 800.000 people a year are moved for the purposes of being exploited for labour and sex. The Telenoticias report says that Nicaraguan, Dominican, Colombian, Peruvian, Chinese, Russian and Philippine nationals make their way to Costa Rica with their eyes on the United States, Canada or Europe.

What makes the situation worse is the number of minors that make up this group, According to the Patronato Nacional de la Infancia (PANI) - the Ch*ld welfare agency - in 2005 they attended to 354 cases involving minors and that number is growing.

According to the non-governmental agency World Vision, they believe the problem is based on many foreigners see Costa Rica as a "sex destination", attracting more foreigners who see that as a stepping stone to the first world.

To combat "sex tourism" and curb slavery, the Costa Rican government has been running an active campaign using billboards, television commercials and in school books, saying that the sexual exploitation of minors is punishable by jail time. Residents are being asked to report cases of sexual abuse of minors by calling 911.

It's one thing for them to declare CR a "slave zone" but they need to quantify or qualify that imo. Are they just saying this to give us a guilty conscience? Do they really expect us to believe many of the girls the average guy that "goes fishing" in CR ends up with is somehow doing it against her will or being forced to? I've seen one und***ge girl in CR hanging out on the corner of Monkey Bar and she was about probably. Other than that, what are they talking about?

probably talking about all the Nica agricultural workers picking the coffee and working on the other farms in CR.

this group needs to sensationalize to attract attention and funding.

I keep imploring them to address the issue of captive "skid marks", but noooo, nobody wants to listen.

I am talking from hearsay but I understand that in both CR and Panama that some Columbian girls are recruited there and put into indentured servitude to pay for their airfare, food and lodging plus a huge commission. This is a form of slavery. I've not heard about any organized use of und***ge chicas. I do think there are quite a few individuals that are und***ge and always check cedulas on any girls that looks even close.

I totally agree that are sex slaves in CR. When I first started going to SJ, I encountered a beautiful Nica, who I met @ a house in Irazú who was "working off her dept", and I had trouble with it. She got like $10 buck out of my fifty & had to pay part of that to the houseman for the room…

Manuel ( a tico) who was my driver @ the time saw nothing wrong with it, but she was kept under lock & key ….Not a pretty picture as is seen in the HDR or KL. She was stuck with the situation, and told me to keep my mouth shut, which I did. I saw her a few times on my first trip..but
I never went back after that, but I think of how it is not all what some make it out to be….some girls are working off the dept!! plan and simple..

Iggy… :P

The term "sex slave trade" seems to be more and more the new 'buzz term." I think it is used for the purpose of "gaining support for the cause."
It is indeed....an attention getting, sympathy spurring, rally-around-the-cause term. :?

The problem I have with it, is that I've never been with a provider who in any way, shape or form seemed to be anything close to "a slave." Indeed, the Korean massage parlors in the U.S. that I used to patronize are always referred to in the newspapers as a base for the "sex slave trade." The girls I was with always seemed to be very much in control of the situation...to the point the sessions seemed to be a waste of time and money. None of them ever seemed to be doing anything against their will, seemed happy to be in the U.S. doing it.......and very much disappointed when they get "rescued" [busted] by the police. :(

Vast majority of Nicaraguan agricultural worker who are in Costa Rica come her voluntarily on their own and are not brought in by coyotes who then put them to work to pay off their debt. The same holds true for the construction and security workers from Nicaragua.

Unfortunately the situation is different with the Chinese brought to Costa Rica. Recent newspaper articles have dealt with the "Chinese mafia" who attempted to bribe the Director of Immigration to issue visas for the immigrants they smuggled in. Many were found working in slave conditions, to pay off the debt incurred to come here, in restaurants and other Chinese owned businesses. Prostitution (sex slaves) were not mentioned in that case.

MG, love and hate are very close to each other. Sometimes we can't distinguish. Another beer might help.

No doubt.......to a degree, it does exist in the world. I just feel that the term "sex slave trade" is loosely used, especially in the United States, for purposes of sensationalizing the "noble cause" of enforcing the laws against massage parlors.

When I got detained a couple weeks ago in Puntarenas for not having my passport (original). I was locked up with some really weird americans. The strange thing is that looking at what he said, now makes some sense. Is it me or all this psuedo righteous christian stuff is advocated by women. Sex Trade! I think its all a funny. Oh by the way, If you do tend to travel here in CR with a photo copy of your passport, its recomendable to get the copy validated by a lawyer. Some cops here are just anal. I learned my lesson!!!
