For the past few nights, I felt that the cultural situation you were thrown into when exiting the lobby bar of the HDR was lacking something. No crack K*ds swarming like flies on a cow pie, or any other threatening types. Definately less humanity or sub-humanity.
According to reliable sourses, the taxistas and Big John ran them away. The police have nothing to do with it. Let's hope it stays this way.

I'll use this thread as an opportunity to ask a question:

Has anyone else ever seen the beggar outside the HDR covered with what looks like severe burns all over his face? The last time I stayed at the HDR, he aggressively approached me as I walked to the Monkey Bar with a chica at about 2:00am. I almost jumped out of my shoes when I saw him! He looked like one of George Romero's ghoulish zombies from Dawn Of The Dead. If you ever see him, you'll know it.

Oh yes, "the burn boy." I haven't seen him for a year or so. Someone had said he was working a different part of town. I had once gave him some coins, he looked at them and then spit on them in disgust.....wanted more. Have to feel sorry for the poor guy.

From what was reported, a few months ago, "burn boy" stabbed another begger and has been on the run/out of the area ever since.

He is now hanging out near ZB. I saw him several times on my walk from the Amon/ZB area to HDR. Oh, and once near NF. Each time I saw him the boy was just gettin' whacked out of his mind on something. Sniffing something and wipin' that nose. He looks even more pitiful than before. It was a sad sight.

If he is doing well enough that he can spit on a few coins that you give him why should we feel sorry for him?

I dunno, maybe cause he's burned over 50% of his body. :P

(Was that a rhetorical question?) :?

There are unfortunate people all over San Jose who for a myriad of reasons have one handicap or another. The vast majority of those get by without begging on the streets using their handicap a ploy to elicit sympathy.

Since he has chosen to beg on the streets he should be grateful to those who respond by giving him a donation not sneer at what he considers an amount beneath his dignity to accept.

Where the need is obvious, I give. I have given to him and will again. Hopefully, some of it goes for food or shelter.

Well that is the rub, when you give money to those guys all you are really doing is supporting thier drug habits and perpetualting the problem. If you want to feed them, buy them food.

Along these lines...tonight around the DelRay area, there seemed to be an increased police presence. Two cops on two seperate corners doing nothing but watching the area it seemed.
Another note...As my Tica and I left the Italian resturant next door to NY Bar, one of the older lady beggars just walked up to my girl and handed her a beautiful red rose. She didn't ask for anything! It touched me so I pulled out some 1K notes for her. Of course, the other K*D begger saw it and hassled me until we got into a cab.
It's just I'd never seen such an act of kindness from one of the street people and may have just totally changed my outlook.

I have seen the burn boy sleeping on the sidewalk numerous mornings, so I dont think much goes to lodging.
Still a pitiful soul.

One of the parking attendants at HDR told Scuba and I a few days ago that in a few weeks some ordinance was kicking in that would bar all the street people from hanging out on that block. They would have to move 1 block down. How nice! More entertainment at the NYB rail.
