Ticos Love To Talk On Their Cell Phone

The love affair Costa Ricans have with their cell phones is not an exaggeration. According to information by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) - the country's monopoly on telecommunications - the average cellular phone subscriber talked for six and one half hours per month during 2006.

The average cellular telephone bill was ¢9.028 colones (us$17.36) monthly, wich is ¢6.128 colones (us$11.78) over the basic monthly rate of ¢2.900 colones (us$5.57). The basic rate includes 60 minutes of calls made time. The numbers mean a revenue of ¢13 billion colones (us$25 million dollars) for ICE from 1.450.000 cellular service subscribers. The total usage was based on calls made and received.

Since ICE only bills customers for calls made, all incoming calls received are paid for by the caller, the numbers translate to an average of 198 minutes or more than three hours of a month of calling. And not all the calls are local. Costa Ricans on the average in 2006 made 10 international phone calls, for a total average calling time of 43 minutes, from each cellular phone.

The Instituto did not say who calls more, men or women.

Ticas obviously talk more.The average time spent on the phone for DR chicas is seveal times the norm. The statistics also do not take into consideration all the Gringos who have cell phones through ICE and use them much less,so the average for Ticas is staggering.

Now since ICE is a government sponsored monopoly,all they have to do is charge both the outgoing and incoming lines for each call,just like in the U.S. and they double their profits for the entire system with NO additional expense. Then maybe they could afford to fix all the potholes and station a cop or two with machine guns on Calle 9 all night so the Gringos won't get mugged there.

I don't know how many times I've finished a session with a chica, and after paying her she says "......I'm going to go pay my cell phone bill."
