Which long distance service/ providers are recommended for calls from CR back to the states. I did a search and only found providers in the other direction US>CR. I'm renting a cell phone while in CR and calls back to the states are about $1.25 per minute.
Do most people just use the calling cards that can be found in the convenience stores or is there a rechargeable service like Tele3Ad? (the CRT VIP sponsor, which provides long distance from US>CR)

I always used internet cafes before I got myself set up with yahoo voice. They run under 10 cents a minute. If you want to use your own phone lying in your bed in your hotel, I can't help you there.

Here's what I have been doing...

Whenever I can, I use skype VOIP "skypeout" service over the internet for 2.1 cents per minute calls to the US - (now with a 6 cents per call connection charge.) If I absolutely have to call the US from a CR cellphone I use Cognicall - a virtual calling card with local Costa Rican 0800 access number which costs 39.2 cents a minute to the US plus whatever the local airtime rate is for the cellphone.

What I do is use a pre-paid ICE calling card. You can buy them in a ton of places. I usually buy one for 3,000¢ (about $5.75) for 22-24 minutes of calls, no connection/maintenance charges. It's about .25-.30/min.

*When going to buy one ask for "tarjeta telefonica", make sure it says "199" on it, not 197.

If you rent a CR cell phone, all local calls are included, so just dial 199, enter the PIN, then dial 00-1-area code-phone number and you're good to go.

Here's what they look like: http://mysite.verizon.net/orangeCRT/fil ... e_card.jpg
