Post subject: | Cell Phone Service |
Hello all I'm new to the Board. I have a trip to CR planned at the end of this month. I have to be able to receive calls from my US cell phone while in CR, however I have Verizon Wireless as my provider and I understand that they do not have service in Costa Rica unlike in the Dominican Republic. Also Verizon Wireless only allows calls to be forwarded to domestic numbers. Can anyone provide me with an idea of how I can get a phone in CR and receive calls forwarded from my Verizon phone? |

If you haven't done so, use the search button as this topic has been discussed many times. Enjoy your trip. Wile Coyote |

You will NOT be able to receive or make calls on any Verizon Wireless cell phone. I also have Verizon at home. VW uses CDMA technology. In CR, they use GSM technology, the ones with SIM cards. If you must have a cell phone, you can rent one @ $10/day from these guys: http://www.cellulartelephonerentals.com I don't know how, if at all, you will be able arrange to have your calls transferred to your CR number. There may be some kind of call transferring service in the US that would be willing to transfer your calls internationally. Google it!!! |

I think that I may be able to open a Skype account and forward my VZW calls to Skype then forward my Skype number to the rented phone in Costa Rica. Can anyone confirm if this will work? |

CALL Verizon, I think that they do offer GSM based cell phone service in CR, obviously using ICE. Your home phone will not work because it is CDMA as was pointed out earlier but they can provide a phone. But I'd say that you would need to have a good reason to stay in contact as it will not be cheap. |

Or just do what I do, call into your cell (make sure it is off in CR or you will pay) via a calling card (available everywhere) 10.00 (5000 colones) get you about 30-40 minutes to call the US Send an e-mail to Rico at above link t request service, he will meet you at the airport or your hotel. |

Verizon says it offers no service in CR at all. I plan on renting a cell in CR but I can't seem to find a way to receive calls forwarded from my VZW phone on my rented phone in CR. Separately, I also wanted to find a way to make outgoing calls from CR and make it appear (spoof calling) that I'm calling from my US VZ cell. Spoofing usually does not work internationally. |
