Making a family trip for April 5-12, staying in Tamarindo and at Tabacon. Is this a bad time of season? Will there be sun for the beach?

Wolfman,
There should be no shortage of sun, but instead, there'll be a shortage of alcohol. That weekend is a "dry" weekend, due to the big holiday (Easter - Semana Santa). Make sure to buy your weekend booze before Friday night.

Thanks for the warning, that would have been a horrible discovery. Does the ban start on Friday or Saturday?

I'm not sure of the 'exact' times that liquor sales shut down. I'm sure that one of the CR residents will chime in here. Have a great trip.

Wolfman,

Thursday is considered a 'Holy Day' as well. The ban starts Thursday

I was in San Jose for Easter week in 2005. Alcohol was not sold on Thursday and Friday. However, some bars opened for drinks Saturday afternoon and night until midnight, then went dry again until Monday.

Some out-of-town tourist spots get away with ignoring the ban. On Holy Thursday night, I was at Selva Verde Eco-Lodge outside of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, and their bar was servings alcoholic drinks to the guests.

In San Jose the ban was enforced. On Thursday many businesses were closed, but the Auto-mercado supermarket was opened during the day. On Friday, many more businesses were closed including the Auto-mercado. It was like Christmas day.

It’s best to buy a 4-day supply on Wednesday.
