Post subject:  Street Noise

Is anyone else really pissed at the street noise including the "train" (bus) with an air horn and bells that travels downtown on Sundays, the constant shouting of Lottery numbers by street sellers and the honking horns.

I must be getting old and cranky. :?:

When it comes to street noise, my pet peeve is the motos that are nothing more than dirt bikes. Especially annoying at 4 in the AM.

It goes with the territory. Some of this is avoidable by staying in a hotel in the Barrio Amon area.

The one distinctive noise for me is the car alarms that all sound the same here with their same sequence of various tones and noises. I had never heard these before coming to Costa Rica. Once, while walking down a street in the U.S., I heard this same type car alarm. For a split second, I thought I was in San Jose.

Two words: Ear Plugs.
I never leave home without them. Foam, Wal-Mart, cheap.

Yes, definitely ear plugs are a must to sleep at night in San Jose.

I use FLENT'S...........33 decibel rating, $10.00 for 50 pair at WAL-MART.

Yes, San Jose is a very noisy city. I think Ticos have a high tolerance for noise in part because almost all of them were raised in cramped quarters packed with siblings, cousins and so on.

I had an apartment out on the outskirts of San Pedro which was almost quiet, except for dogs barking. I moved closer, Los Yoses, and there were fewer dogs but my neighbor was a crazy woman who talked to herself at all hours of the night (actually having imaginary arguments with her dead ex-husband).

At the moment I'm living in downtown San Jose. The variety of noises is staggering. Busses, car horns, car alarms, cars with sub-woofers pounding out reggaton, street vendors, motorcycles, and even a damn chihuahua across the street in a parking garage.

At first it was very hard to sleep, and I was using ear plugs, which for some reason made my ears itch. I found another solution in using my laptop to play a CD I have of ocean sound. It masks the sound nicely. I can still hear the alarms but they don't stand out like they used to. And after all this time here, over a year, I find I am getting accustomed to most of the noise.

But I have a lot of sympathy for people trying to sleep through San Jose noise. Earplugs are great. Stay somewhere other than the gulch. Or stay up all night chasing chicas.

helps muffle the cries of passion. sometimes the gym across the street from my favorite hotel plays dance routine music so loud, I cannot hear the little darling's words.

Their lips are moving and I know they are saying something.

Wonder what I am missing?

any ideas?

To me by far the most annoying sound from the street comes from the people who are in the street all damn day. The drug dealers outside BM , The preacher man , The weird guy with the guitar that goes "AHHHHHHH" all day , shoeshine , the gruesome two-some by NYB , Oscar , lotto ticket hawkers , and the worst ... the "one coin" K*ds.

Between the Cars blowing the Horns and the guys stopping to shout at all the Trannies hanging on the corner outside and JUST UNDER THE WINDOW of the ZB hotels suite we stayed in, we gave up trying to get any sleep until after 2 AM ...Later on the Weekend.

And just as annoying and distracting if you're sessioning in any of the rooms on the street side of the facility during the daytime....

Shit!

After a number of mini vodkas and a hand job I'm good to go with my slumber. Then again, the chica in in the bed is not too amused by my premature ejaculation. Never could get that straight. Pitiful is as pitiful does I guess.

Hotel Castillo.... a great place to sleep.... room 10.

For 5 trips I stayed at the La Gran Via. I mentally shot and killed the tuba guy multiple times.

Room 401, Corner Room, Balcony overlooking Dos Gringos Cantina and Restauarant, Hotel Morazan.

I love that little room.

I must have been sauced to the 7th level of hell, because I couldn't hear shit when I slept. Just at 6am in the morning. When I woke.

But it's a good room.
