From Jan 10 to Jan 22 the annual fiesta is going on at Palmares, complete with carnival rides,games, tope , bullfights and musical entertainment. I plan on spending a day there with my regular taxi driver and his family. If you are looking for something to do, this fiesta is always a great take. It is a great place to take your favorite chica. If you've never seen a bullfight, it's a tremendous experience. While most Americans think that it is cruel, to me it actually is a microcosm of latin culture. Bullfighting illustrates the passion, violence, grace, pride and art of all things latin. I went to the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City two years ago and saw the first bullfights in the history of Mexico where all the toreros were female (toreras). I fell in love with each and every one of them! It was a pure art form! I know this may be hard to understand for those who have not seen it but it will be something that you will never forget. "Toros a la Tica" synonymous with the season's festivities in Costa Rica. The Costarican Bullfight is very different because the bulls are never harmed, or killed. The most famous cattle ranches provide the bulls free. Also the bullfighters are normal people that get into the arena without any professional preparation. It's amazing that only a few actually get hurt by the bulls. This activity is a headache for the red cross that voluntarily offers it's service in the arena. The bulls are never harmed in the Tico version of the bullfights. The most popular phase of the Tico bullfight is the run when dozens of young men race into the ring en masse with the intention of frightening the bull and provoking it to attack. Although the bull is never harmed, occasionally one of the men is gored. The whole thing is a performance designed to release adrenaline, relieving the frustrations of the past year. |

DG, thanks for the update. I'm disappointed that it is not a traditional bullfight but will still most likely go. Sounds like a lot of fun! This is my first trip to CR but have plans on possibly moving down there in 5-7 years. El Guapo |

Palmares is no fun whatsoever. The beauties will NEVER talk to you while their friends are around....and they all go there with friends. If you like TONS of people...go ahead...but too many for me. And final thing....the music is deafening. I mean it is so loud you need to use earplugs to walk around. Maybe I am too old for this....maybe 26 is too old for Palmares. My take. |

Littleshit, Actually some of us prefer to take in a bit of the culture of Costa Rica when we travel there. If I could come those dates I would be interested. Maybe next year. Have a good trip Don Gordo. rbc100 |

YO DG: I for one prefer that type of bullfighting. Had my share of the originals and as a result have not been to a bull killing in over 21 years....just do not like the inhumane way the bulls are treated.....have seen a couple that were beyond the pale. Yes, that is a fun event and I concur with a previous poster as to the noise. Then again, latino events can get rather loud. Hope you have a safe and enjoyable stay in CR this trip. |

Littleshit The purpose of my post was not to find yet another hunting ground for chicas. Many of us who visit San Jose on a regular basis are looking for something different to do while in Costa Rica. Palmares is a wonderful diversion from the San Jose scene, especially for this 61 year old gringo. |
