I may be one of the few people who actually call someone in Costa Rica on a regular basis. Does anyone have a good source for reasonable calling cards. I think I pay around 9.6 cents a minute.

I was in New Jersey and found one that was around .05 a minute but you had to dial a local number. Since I am no longer there I need another option.

Just do a google search for "calling cards costa rica".

There are literally hundreds of pre-paid calling cards online. You pay a pre-set amount and you receive an email with the access numbers and PIN. Each one has different fees associated with it. NO MATTER WHAT CARD YOU'RE LOOKING AT, MAKE SURE YOU READ THE FINE PRINT BEFORE YOU BUY IT. Some have a low rate (as low as 3¢ per minute) but have high "maintenance" fees (as high as 79¢ per week). Others have no maintenance fees but have a higher rate (8-9¢).

Also, you may already know this... calling cards usually charge a higher rate to call cell phones versus land lines.

I have used MCI calling cards for about 4 years. I get them at Costco, (they are also renewable on the phone) at the rate of 2.86 cents per minute or roughtly 700 minutes for $20.00. I have called CR several times and the rate isn't that high (comparitively). I have also called the States from CR and it is definitely cheaper.

ROFLMAO, you should see some of my monthly calling card charges. Use the Tel 3 from CRT. It is the best I have seen so far. Go to the discounts page and sign up through there. Pingo.com is good as well, Berk recommended that one to me.

Ya I think we are some of the few that actually call CR frequently …

I do daily and I have researched this extensively. For some reason CR is one of the most expensive countries to call from the US, from a call-around deal like a phone card. Disregarding the VOIP internet calling (not an option for me); I found an account that is about 6 cents a minute from Seattle. Why I can call Argentina or even China for 2 cents/minute on this account, and Costa Rica is six cents I do not know: (ICE?).

Anyway check pingo.com. It has been pretty reliable for me for the last six months; a couple down times but nothing really inconvenient. Once it is set up you can recharge it manually or automatically from a bank or credit account online, 98 cents monthly maintenance fee monthly (Thanks Orange for reminding me). And you can track your call usage online. Next best thing to being there…
