...These are the Current salaries in Costa Rica --------------------------------------------------- Costa Rica Salaries At the beginning of June 2006 the Consejo Nacional de Salarios (CNS) approved an increase of the 6% in the minimum Costa Rica salaries in the private sector. As of July 1st 2006: Housemaids will earn 77,445.93 colones or US$150.96 per month Light vehicle driver, retail sales assistant will earn 4,890.86 or US$9.53 per day.A carpenter, a bus driver or a bricklayer will earn 5,104.53 colones or US$9.95 per day The foreman in charge of building your new home? 6,132.45 colones or US$11.95 per day Secretaries will earn 155,588.12 colones or US$303.29 Security guards will earn about US$283 per month. In looking at these wages, the first question that pops into your mind is how 'expensive' can it be to live in Costa Rica? We're not saying that someone can live like a king on these wages, of course you can't but, if you have your home paid for and are earning US$1,500 per month in retirement income, you should be able to live very comfortably in Costa Rica. So next time someone tells you how 'expensive' it is to live in Costa Rica, just smile quietly and accept the fact that this person knows little about Costa Rica living! * Current exchange rate 20th June 2006 is US$1=513 colones 'Nuevos salarios' means new salaries 'Actividad' means occupation. 'Salario diario vigente' means applicable daily wage. 'Salario mensual vigente' means applicable monthly wage. 'Alza' means the raise that they are to receive. Although 1.4 million people work in the private sector, the increase is only applicable to those earning minimum salaries. It should also be noted that in addition to the minimum salaries, employers will have some additional expenses. http://www.welovecostarica.com/members/436print.cfm Costa Rica Minimum Salaries Damn... makes you a big spender with those 5K tips... ![]() PIDD |

Pidd, Nice find & thanks for sharing. It is true the cost of living is low in CR if you are willing to accept their standard of living. It is the luxuries that are so high even more so than the USA because some of these things have to be imported. CR Govt likes the Robin Hood tax system & jack up taxes on luxury items. I don't want to finish life living like the average Tico ![]() ![]() I guess you have uncovered the secret to our success with the ladies. All along I thought we were just so wonderful & handsome with beautiful eyes they could not resist us. Now look what you have gone & done! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Questions on other boards come up all the time about working in CR to support one's self. As an American, you aren't worth anymore than the above in the same job so think twice about considering working while in CR. If you want to live above the Tico standard, you'd better be bringing some outside cash with you. * |

now I may screw this up BUT, Zippy or CR dude are far better at this kind of topic. I do try and read about CR. The article was published a week or two after the article rating the happiest people in Central America. I read an article in the Tico times said that items used to determine CR inflation have changed, Gone are basics like blankets and candles, in are cell phone rates, DVD's and so on, these " basket " items are considered normal expences to live. CR is being changed like it or not. And yes inflation is bad, my last trip I did shop with the locals the last week there, indeed it was cheeper , perhaps half price over Canada or the US for a few bags of food but I was full aware of CR wages at that time and I wondered how a tico could afford the $ 35 US I had in my back pack.
