Post subject:  Electricity in Costa Rica

Need a little help here. What is the voltage in Costa Rica? Are they 110 like in the U.S. or do I need an adapter, like in Europe? Thanks.

The electrical system, largely built by U.S. companies, is the same as in the U.S.A. and Canada.

110-120 volts, 60 Hz. alternating currrent.

All your electric shavers, popcorn poppers, Prelude 3 vibrators and electric nose-hair removers will work exactly as they do in the U.S.

In some out-of-the-way places, older locations in the city, etc. you may encounter a strange-looking electrical outlet. These however are pretty rare.

Otherwise, all the outlets you'll encounter are the same as here. No worries.

Hint: You may want to bring a "ground lifter," or "cheater plug" if you have 3-prong grounded electrical devices. I didn't encounter a lot of 3-pin, grounded U.S.-style outlets.

Hope this helps.

The old wing in the Sportsmens Lodge qualifies. :P

Just ask the front desk and they will lend you a small converter that will allow you to plug in your 3-prong laptop or whatever into the outlet like usual. Most, if not all, of the new wing rooms have the 3-prong outlets.

For the higher powered vibrators we recommend hooking them up to a car battery so as not to short circuit the hotel.
