No.....from what I remember, the van ride was maybe an hour from the gulch area. They take you to a Visitor's Center near the top of the volcano. From there, you do walk several hundred yards to the top. Be sure to dress for rain and wind and cold, regardless of how the weather is down below. I really enjoyed it  .
SIDE NOTE: Be sure to check out the cleanest, most well stocked and modern restrooms you'll see anywhere in Costa Rica.....located in the Visitor's Center .

Irazu Volcano, the countryside remind me of Europe and there are lots of nice Mirador type resturants on the way. Enjoy.

I would recommend 2 day trips: -ATV riding in the mountains (check CRT VIP discounts page for info) -Canopy Tour (zip lines) Those are the 2 most fun things you can do in between the sucking and phucking.

whitewater rafting is probly good right now.However im sure it would wear a person out or maybe even drown them
