Post subject:  How bad is rainy season.
I was thinking about coming in August, but I am not sure how much of a damper all the rain is going to be. How bad is it, or should I try a different place say Cuba for example

Cuba in the middle of the tropical season? To me the weather in CR is similar to the weather in FL during this time of year. I have been in april/may/june/september/ october. Not really all that different than my local weather. Humidity wasnt as bad there. YMMV. This will be the first time I will be there in July/August. I favor the southern caribbean coast and found it very tolerable. In fact if the weather is bad it kicks up the break at salsa brava! Knowing how unpredictable the tropics are, I'd take CR. Then again, I can't comment on cuba. Good luck....

Rain is NOT a problem. It rains for about 1-2 hours daily. It is usually just a drizzle or light rain, not a torrential downpour.

You need to find indoor activities during that time which is not difficult to do.

I have to second this! I have to laugh when people ask me about the rainy season because they think it rains all day long for 60 days stright.
I find the best time to go is in rainy season because there are less people there and I have never lost a day of sun light in CR. It is also cheaper! Maybe this might be the best kept secret!.. ahh for get what I said before... it rains all day for 60 days stright ya! :wink:

Rainy season in Costa Rica is very similar to the rainy season in South Florida. At some part of the day you are very likely to get a rain shower. They do not last very long, about an hour or less, but they can be a very strong rainfall. If you are anticipating just a drizzle you might get a very wet surprise :lol:

As in South Florida you may be caught in a downpour and a 1/2 mile away the sun is shining. No need to pack an umbrella as every store sells them and during a storm every street corner has a vendor selling them for a very reasonable price.

There is no reason to avoid Costa Rica in August but I would not want to be in Cuba in the height of hurricane season :(

Shush....quiet you guys. Lets keep pumping the idea that the rainy season is a terrible time to visit. That along with the ever increasing crime rate may very well create some empty airplane seats.

I have been to Varadero and Havana a few times during the July/Aug time frame. Humid as Fxxk , can rain all afternoon, just so you know. A/C at the 5 stars wasn't very useful. And then there could be storms, as mentioned.

As for CR, depends on where you'll be staying. If you're justing planning to do your rounds in SJO, the rain won't affect much of your pooning. So far this year's rain season has not been as wet as the last two. But you do get the occasional super douper 2 hour day time down pour. Other than that , life goes on.

Don't K*D yourself. It rains in SJ every day, and usually hard. It will continue to rain until . at least, tell the middle of November. This is not a tropical island. We are in the mountains at 3800 feet. If you want to come in the high season, come in December through March. SEAHAWK

Usually starts around 2 or 3 and is over by 5 or 6.
Guys: Yesterday (Sunday) we had a real downpour. Lucky for me, I was in bed with the Novia. Sometimes, I LOVE the rain!

I never said it wasn't going to rain.............. It will rain for sure almost everyday during the rainy season, however the mornings seem to be nice unitil about noon.......... and I never remember getting wet after mid-night. It's no big deal unless you plan on doing a lot eco-tourism stuff.

Rainy season could be divided into two parts: light and heavy. During light (mid to late April-August) you will have light, brief showers on about 75% of the days in the afternoon. In the heavy part, you will have rain every afternoon for about 3-4 hours, and it will come down hard. Rain during this period can also last into the night. Last year we had a rather unusual five day stretch where it rained day and night.

It depends on the year. One year I was down for August and it only rained 5 times. That was unusual, but there is no hard and fast rule on weather anywhere. Some years December is wet, sometimes not.
