Yesterday, the current novia and I went to a party in Cuidad Colon. It was at a typical tico house in a very modest area. I've always been impressed by Tico politeness but yesterday brought it to the forefront once again. In the states, when a lot of us attend a party where you are the unknown party goer, it can get a little embarrasing. There are questions like, Where do you live? Where do you work? What do you do? What kind of car do you drive? People are checking you out and it can be a little uncomfortable. Well, at the Tico party, I was immediatly made to feel comfortable and welcome. I was offered a nice place to sit and was served whatever I wanted - no questions like the ones mentioned above. These people who don't make a whole lot of money were there to have fun. They know how to have fun. There are no ego trips. There was lots of laughter, food, music, dancing. I had a ball and unlike similar events in the US, I didn't want to leave when it was over. I saw the novia in a different light. She's normally a little reserved and shy. Yesterday, in her own element, she let her hair down and had a blast. I felt honored to be a part of this experience and can't wait till the next one. These people who have next to nothing are truly the salt of the earth. Just my 2 colones. LVSteve |

Brother Steve, this reminds me of going to my next door neighbor's house for a get together.... they are Mexican and it reminds me of family get togethers that my ex-GF invited me to.... she is Filopina. The California melting pot is often like living abroad.

LV, I agree. I dated a Filipina for 9 years and was married to a Cambodian. These people are just as you say, "The salt of the earth." Very different than going to social events with all gringos/gringas. Social events associated with my line of work almost make me ILL. All the egos and the "I'm better than you attitude." In fact, when I brought along my Cambodian wife I was almost looked down upon. dapanz1 |

LVSteve, Very interesting post. I have had the good fortune of experiencing a similar situation. Being amongst them, with their family members, in a festive environment, really gives you a good feeling to be a part of it. Sometimes, it's the simple things in life..........

I have had the good fortune to have had several meals at the home of my taxi driver with his family. I can only echo what Steve has said. These are the kinds of experiences that keep me coming back to Costa Rica. |

Last year before Handy got hitched .. I got to celebrate Xmass in Medellin. X-mass dinner consited of chicharron, pork, plantains and rice cooked in a fire pit inches from a concrete house (ok so we charred her neighbors front door!). The point is it felt like a great highschool bon fire in the woods .. what a great time. At midnight we had little stockings for all the little K*ds with some candy and a single toy .... one of my best Xmasses ever!!! |

Happy to see others enjoy the true spirit of what this culture offers. Sure there is great warmth in being with a hot partner but this cultural warmth is really special also. Many things we do in a Latin culture are hard to explain to people in the USA that have never been there & the one LVsteve describes is also another one that is difficult for many. The people that only live in the material world will never get much out of what LV posted about. Myself I like both as one makes you appreciate the other. All the true Native parties I have been to in CR or other Latin cultures have always made me feel like part of their families. I can not say the same about the USA as so many make you feel uncomfortable because so many people are trying to impress you with BS. |

Reminds me of the party after my ex-wife's nephew's first communion in Colombia. Family, food, booze, music, K*ds, etc. I was outside watching the K*D's play and I looked down and there was a 3 yr old girl with her arm's wrapped around my leg. My ex said, "She NEVER does that to a stranger!" After the baptism of another of my ex's nephews there was a dinner with food and drink. The dinner was 1/4 of a chicken, salad, rice, plantains and bread. There was also sodas and beer. Since I was the little one's godfather I thought I'd play big shot gringo and pick up the tab. For 30 people it came to just under $100. Made some serious points with the extended family that day. I miss my ex (sometimes) but the memories of her family are even harder to let go. |

I just saw her a little while ago. She has a "target" in her sights. When I asked her if she loves him or if he is just "filling the slot" (of potential father) and she wouldn't answer me. She says he's a "really nice guy". She predicts they will be married before the year is over. Things may not be all rosy. They have had some arguments. I asked her if he's seen the "real" Adriana? She said, "Not yet". Good for her, bad for him. I still love her but I spent 5 years trying to raise her, adding a real baby to the mix would be more than I would want to take on. |

There was another side benifit: My novia really got wild when the dancing started and Man, was she sexy. Kind of reminded me of Havana Nights. I almost said to her, why can't you be that wild in La Coma? Bit my tounge though. In addition, she was constantly touching me and in general, very affectionate. Maybe she was telling the other girls hands off, this gringo is mine. I loved seeing this side of her. Really gets me going.
