Sounds great. I hope everyone understands the security risk of many, many people being on one wireless, unsecured network. I'm sure hackers are as excited about this as anyone else.

RACSA promises wireless all over metropolitan area By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Radiográfica Costarricense S.A., the Internet provider, says it will make an area west of San José a wireless hot spot starting in April. The company said it will use WiMax technology that will allow computer users to install a small antenna to access a signal beamed from a mountaintop. The signal has an 8 kilometer radius and will include Santa Ana and Escazú, the company said. Similar systems will be installed from Alajuela to Tres Rios, the company said, providing total coverage of the Metropolitan area. In addition to an antenna, users will need a converter box and a computer that can receive and generate wireless signals. The signals also can be received by any number of hand-held personal assistants like Palm and others. The company, known as RACSA, said that the service is now being offered near the court complex in downtown San José and in Juan SantamarÃa airport. Similar services are being offered in cafes and restaurants by private companies which provide wireless hookups with limited range, usually for a fee. |

You definitely do not want to be doing any banking, credit card buying or other sensitive things on a open wireless network. Lots of bad things can happen. |

Be sure to use some sort of encription -- ssh, scp, et al. for logins or transfers to other machines. Encripted stuff shouldn't be worse than usual over the net, but anything sensitive in the clear is silly anywhere outside of a secure network. Don't send sensitive information in unencripted email! |

Being somewhat ignorant about computers,wireless and the such,I am not sure what is going on here with RACSA. I live in Escazu.I currently have wireless and have experienced good service. I see no need for anything different especially if it could compromise my security. |
