Post subject:  Sports Coat
In making my plans for August I decided to take in a performance at the Teatro National. Normally I'm a very casual dresser, i.e. jeans, Dockers, t's or long sleeved sports shirts. Now I'm told that I really should have at least a sports coat to wear to the theatre.

I don't own anything anymore that would be suitable for the warm climate, so I'm asking the membership for a recommendation as to where I could pick up an inexpensive Sports Coat which would only be worn once or twice. Any recommendations as to discount clothiers ? What would you figure it might cost ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please no suggestions for Goodwill, Salvation Army, or borrowing one from Circus :-)

I WOULD MAKE A SIDE TRIP TO THE SAN PEDRO MALL. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF MEN SHOPS THERE. DON'T GO TO MULTIPLAZA - TOO EXPENSIVE.

I really don't think a sports jacket is necessary for a concert at Theatro National. However if you do buy one you could always give it to shoe-shine boy after the show.He's the only person I know who always wears one.

Shit Bob, so that is how Jose accumulates his extensive wardrobe of tastful business suites. I wonder how many gringos bring suits to CR only to find out they don't need them.

Forget the mall, there's a thrift store a few blocks from the HDR. I'll bet you can find a coat for two bucks.

Seriously, I bought a rain coat/jacket for the waterfall tour at that shop.

Agree totally with VB on that. Ticos go to weddings and funerals with out a jacket or suit.

Don't know why you are so quick to dismiss those options El Lamero. There are "ropa americana" stores all over San Jose that a have a very good selection of clothing, some never worn, at very very low prices. Take a look at some of them then make a decision that you do not want to use them.

Good point about the "Ropa Americana" stores in San Jose. I've been there several times with chicas buying ropa for the bebes. I was impressed with the good values there.

My bad. I was trying to make a joke about Goodwill, Salvation Army shops in CR. Hell I live in the boondocks and buy most of my stuff at a thrift shop run by the local Animal Shelter. :-) so I'm definitely not above shopping at such places.

I'd never heard of the "Ropa Americana" stores. Don't think I even noticed them last year when I was in SJ. Anyone know approximately where the nearest one would be to El Presidente or the HDR ?

Don't know what to say regarding the "coat" situation at Theato National. Two locals who attend regularly told me that coats (but not ties) were necessary, but perhaps they were speaking of "special" concerts where they bring in some international opera star. I won't be attending any of those :-)

For those of you that have never been there, the Theato National, was built in 1896 and restored to close to it's original condition. A great way to kill an hour or so some afternoon. They have tour guides for English, Spanish, German, and French speaking visitors. All are young actresses. Nice eye candy at the very least.

Unless they have changed in the the last year, slacks, shirt and shoes are fine unless they have a special reception party for a well known entertainer. I'll loarn you my tux......yeah right.
