Word on the street is (couldn't resist DD) :) Semana Santa will be extended an extra day-through Monday this year, some new law declaring certain holidays will now be celebrated on Mondays... Ticos will be able to stay at the beach an extra day and not return to work until Tue.

    In this particular case the dreaded "Word on the street" is absolutely correct.

Juan Santa Maria day has been moved from April 11 to April 17 allowing the Ticos to not have to return to work until Tuesday the 18th.

Let me get this right. Semana Santa starts on Thursday 4/13 at midnight and ends on Monday 4/17 at midnight? Is the word on the street correct? It conflicts with AM Costa Rica.

We really have been talking about two different things.

One. The sale of alcoholic beverages. That is prohibited all of Thursday & Friday. April 13 & 14.

Two. Semana Santa holiday period. That is when the government and some private industry basically shut down. That normally is the entire week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. This year it is extended one day, Monday April 17, to celebrate Juan Santa Maria Day which normally is celebrated on April 11.
