This lady is standing in front of the DR trying to get money for some type of cause. A gringa

I told her I only would give her money if she worked the DR

OK... lady, if you want some money, get your ass in the DR. You might just make 500 colones...

Sounds like Sandy. She's been around for years trying to help the Ch*ldren of CR. She's a nice lady and I think she is legit. I usually give her a few dollars to help the cause........cut her a little slack, guys.

Thats the problem ... I think she is legit... you have no way of knowing if she is or if she is just another scammer.

There are most likely many legitimate charities in CR helping Ch*ldren why not give your donation to them?

At least she is not dressed like a nun or a phuckin doctor like the others.
She looks like a tree hugger.

ID and KC,

Valid points. What leads me to believe she is not a scam, is that once she asked me to purchase a few boxes of crayons and a few other supplies [minimal dollar amount]. On the other hand, you may be right.....I've certainly been wrong before. I guess I try to see the good in people and believe there are some out there yet.

Part of a good con is looking the part you are playing.

Just to set the record straight I have no problem with giving her some colones. If she is a scam the financial loss is minimal and if she is legit the help for the K*ds is great.

What a bunch of cheap bastards...

Pony up a couple of bucks...right or wrong.. and go on about your business

It probably won't change your life, although the way you're talking, maybe the thought of being beaten out of a dollar or two is too much to handle

You mean those 'blood pressure' guys dressed in white are still around?
They used to always hang around the Gran Hotel and the plaza next to the National Theatre. I guess some things never change.

Good cause or not, I get tired of 200 solicitations on a daily basis. I give nothing this way just because it annoys me. I don't have a problem contributing to worthwhile charities down here that aren't begging on the sidewalk. Think about it, how much can an individual get per day? Take into account that the person soliciting has to eat and have a roof over their head. So, do the math. Lots of good organizations and other ways to help out down here.

There was a posting on a Yahoo group called Costa Rica Living a few back that while on a different subject it touched on this discussion.

A guy who gets into San Jose occasionally, by a bus that drops him at Coca Cola, got into the habit of dropping a few colones into the cup of an elderly women in that area. Each time he did she would thank him profusely and ask the lord to send his blessing to this kind gentleman.

A few weeks ago on his trip to San Jose he spotted the women at her usual spot near Coca Cola. As was his habit he dropped a few hundred colones in her cup, This time there was no thanks, not a smile, not a nod of the head....just nothing. The reason was apparent.....

She was busy chatting on her cell phone.

Some of these street people do very well financially. It is up to each person to decide their level of comfort with who the contribute to. I have my priorities and they may be different from your. That makes neither of us a "cheap bastard" or an "easy mark"

Paco...

I have a few colones for you if you really need them..

Maybe some of us Gringos ought to line up outside the Del Rey for pu*sy money. Our cause could be save the Gringo Saps from themselves.

What do you say Paco... I have a few spare hours to collect.

I don't get all this saving people shit out side the door at HDR, whether it be tree huggers or blood pressure monitors or what the hell else (I am cranky today  ) When I head down town to the gulch it is for one purpose only to fall in that BIG BLACK HOLE OF DEBAUCHERY! :? I don't want to be saved or care about my blood pressure or want to waste my time on saving the unsavable. I am a man on a mission that has taken some time to save my pinga from necrosis of the life style of the USA. The only thing one can save is your own ass but escaping a black hole is hard to do?
