City trying to round up the homeless and youngsters

By Saray Ramírez Vindas
of the A.M. Costa Rica staff

San José officials conducted some 85 operations Tuesday to remove the homeless and the und***ge from the city streets.

That was the word from Johnny Araya, the municipal mayor. He made his comments when he finished a visit at the home of Óscar Arias Sánchez, the president-elect. Araya, his brother Luis and their father, Fabio, came for an afternoon visit. Araya said that the goal was to clean up the streets of the city. He also promoted his plan to repopulate the downtown of the city. This would require a form of urban renewal.

The Arayas may figure in the future Arias government. All are well-known members of the Partido Liberación Nacional as is Arias. Another brother was the party's presidential candidate four years ago.

However, Araya was not saying much about that subject Tuesday. He did stress the need for better housing in the city to coincide with his repopulation plan.

The streets of San José have been populated for years by the homeless and homeless Ch*ldren. Periodically, officials try to bring the youngsters to better environments, but most run away and return to the streets, in part because many have a crack cocaine habit.

do any of the vets/expatrite members see anything really happening with downtown?>

will the street urchins really be removed?

will any gentrification expand to the Central Market area such as up towards Avenidas 5 and 7 and Calles 6 and 4?

I seem to remember reading an article about one neighborhood in/near San Jose that banded together with residents and local businessses voluntarily taxing themselves with a special assesment to pay for and work with local authorities to increase police presence....why can't something like this occur within the central district?

There seems to be a frenzy of activity going right now as far as pothole repair goes. Also, I've noticed that the city is making an effort to repaint curbs, and white markings on the streets themselves.

Also, about 6 months ago, the city buldozed a 3 block area of Ave. Premira that had vendor tents and shacks that were situated on the sidewalks effectivly blocking entrance to the legitimate stores. This action greatly improved traffic flow through this area.

Lastly, there was some talk a while back of creating more pedestrian walk streets (ala Ave. Central) but I haven't seen any evidence of them starting work.

It would be nice if they would take a close look at making the gulch and surrounding area safer. Sure they might not want to embrace this sort of tourism, but the fact is, and I'm sure the government is aware, that the gringos that come in in droves DO have an effect on the local economy.

They might want to sweep all the TVs out of the park as well :D

Of course the other side of this coin is maybe if enough negative publicity is generated San Jose will get the Columbia rap and the huge wave of ill informed cien paying gringos will stay away and go see Mr. Bunnyranch instead, therefore driving the prices DOWN :D :D :D

Just a thought....

I live on Calle Central, and had to step over a couple of derelicts walking to the gulch (5 blocks, give or take). I suspect they are trying to do something but I wonder where the 'authorities' would put these people. Most are harmless (not all) but many are obviously in need of more than just a hot meal. Not to put too fine a point on it, most of these folks are 'mental.' Even if some of them found a million dollars in the street, they'd still be sleeping in boxes because they just aren't sane enough to know what to do. I see them browsing through garbage for something to eat, for example, and obviously haven't washed in years.

If there are derelicts (whatever you want to call them) in Malibu or Santa Monica, how can anyone expect to solve the problem in a country that can't get the money together to fill a few (okay, a LOT of) potholes? I suppose they could try to bus them all to Cartago or... wherever.

I'm not sure what my point is. I'd love for the beggars and crackheads and glue sniffers to go away but I'm not holding my breath.

Hey Bilko,

do you rent/own an apartment or condo...?

if you don't mind me asking, what is the general range for 1 and 2 bed condos/apartments per month or to purchase in the Mercado Central district?

I always liked that area even if some of the streets are not as clean or quiet as Barrio Amon near the SL

As for "urban renewal"......the thing that amazes me the most when I'm in San Jose is the missing sewer drain covers at the pedestrian cross walks, especially the one on Central Avenida, at the crosswalk just 20 yards from the Hamburgesa Factory. It was missing last July when I was in San Jose, and still missing when I came back in January. This is a busy crosswalk, and the hole that remains is big enough for a Ch*ld to step off the sidewalk and into the hole, dropping 6 feet into the storm sewer. I can just imagine the damage it could do to an older adult who stepped into it. I mentioned it to a NYB regular who lives real close to this crosswalk during my Jan./Feb. trip. He said he complained about it after I mentioned it to him. It will be interesting to see if it has been taken care of when I go back the next time...........I'm not holding my breath.

The rent on our apartment is a bit over 300 a month, 3 bedrooms, unfurnished. It's convenient and a half, but a bit noisy. The apartments are pretty nice, certainly safe. PM me if you want more details. There are usually a few vacancies.
