I'm moving and as a result found a bunch of Canadian dollars from an old project. Do cabbies and ticos - in general - accept Canadian? Never saw a topic on this.

I was told no, and would not want to be in Costa Rica with nothing but Canadian money.

There's usually an exchange booth in most airports (Newark has one) but the rate may not be as good as a regular bank. Then again, a bank may not a good idea as that's how they make money.
If you were going to the Dominican Republic you'd be better off 'cause they will give you a good exchange there.
Good luck.

Chi_trekker, better to change it at a US bank. Thats what I did for my Dec trip. Brought some US cash then changed at the DR casino for CR colones. The double hit only hurts for a while

Airport exchange booths, worldwide, are the biggest rip off joints I have ever encountered. If the airport has a legitimate bank, as many do, then you can get a fair exchange rate at the bank. Unfortunately many airport authorities will not allow banks to exchange currency as it is in competition with the exchange booth from whom the authority collects large fees.

The exchange kiosk at SJO, arrivals area, gives you about 80% of what the bank located at the departure level gives you.

No CAN dollars,

I have been here 2 weeks, US or colons are fine,
the smaller shops give you a funny look even with dollars .
