Azcentral, I have seen Nokia phones as low as 33,000 colones in places like Mas x Menos and Maxi Bodega. Actually had some pretty good looking phones for 60 ish.

Perfect bought one today. For anyone else having problem with their phone just went to a cell store by HLH and asked for usado phone. Got a nice basic nokia for 30000 out the door. Phone and sim works great but you need to enter sim code whenever you power up the phone. Other than that service is great.

Just an update for Blackberry users on Verizon's Network. Blackberry phones are the only Verizon phones equiped with sim cards.

I own a Blackberry Storm. I called Verizon telling them I am going back to Costa Rica in two weeks, and I got them to give me the code unlock my phone. This way I don't need to by a phone for CR, and I can make US or CR calls by simply replacing the sim cards (granted that US calls have a $2.25/minute roaming charge).

You would need to check your phone to make sure that it is compatible with Costa Rica's 1800MHz network, but in my case the Storm is.

There is no charge to get Verizon to unlock your cell phone, but they do make you agree that they will no longer provide tech support for your phone. But Research in Motion (the company that makes Blackberry) does still support the phone.

I hope this is helpfull.

I bought 5 Motorola V3 Razr's on Ebay and unlocked them if you are patient you should be able to get them for about $20.00 total. They are not fancy phones but that way who cares if the chica steals it.

I went to the ICE office at the RASCA building this morning. Good news. The info guy spoke English. The bad news is that he said all the prepaid lines have been sold.

Crap. I'll try another place.

Apparently they only have so many available at any given time. I got mine in September and a couple days later they were out. Never know when they will start again. If you do have one know, make sure you continue to buy minutes. There is also an expiration date each time you put more mintues in. If you let it go past the expiration date you will lose your number. I left my phone in San Jose with a friend and prepaid cards so she could periodically put more minutes into phone.

I got my prepaid just in time. A buddy told me today that ICE is out of regular cell lines for citizens and residents. They are only replacing lines of stolen phones.

ICE kiosk for Prepaid sims is open and operating. As you come into baggage claim area, turn right, it will be on your right by the banos...

Brother Ilv4play's Post raises the question--Can you have somebody buy a prepago SIM card and mail/ hold it til the ultimate owner arrives? Or is it immediately registered to the buyer? I admit total ignorance on this.

I had not thought of having someone buy me one down there. I would assume since it is a sim card that you can just pop it in the phone and on your way you go. I made sure all of my phones are unlocked so there will not be a problem on my end. The sim from my AT&T phone works in all of them.

Jut an FYI

When you purchase a Prepago (prepaid sim) at the airport they require a passport and is registered to your name and passport number. Buying it for someone else is certainly possible remembering that it will be in your name

Thanks El Silencioso. For anyone interested they have quad band and tri band phones in yahoo shopping for $20 to $30. I picked one up in Amazon for $40 before I saw them.
