I.D.,

PAC's primary election was this weekend. Ottón won by over 70%. Not an opinion poll.

Come on now, There are other places to monger. After 18 trips I wouldn't miss CR. It's a dirty crime infested shithole, (San Jose) sorry CR residents but I speak only the truth. Flame away!!!

Yep! Just what we need! An e-mail bomb from a monger site to a candidate who is hostile to our hobby during a campaign in which the issue of prostitution has not been raised (despite the justifiable concern on this board).
I should have included some emoticons. That comment was said in jest in response to a comment made earlier from my ball busting buddy Vegas Bob.

I actually wrote a Cliff Notes version of "War and Peace" once, but it came out even longer than the original   :P

I don't want to throw sh$t in the game, but as el tranquilo mentioned, Oton has won the PAC nomination. He lost to Oscar by a slim margin the last time around. I don't know if any of you are familiar with him, but you might want to check him out before rallying against Laura. Not that any of you can vote. But this guy is a pure totalarian. His views are right up there with Hugo. So who knows how you all might fare if he is elected. Wish everybody the best including me.

tuanis
I haven't read about the totalitarian thing but I have read some other interesting things about Oton and the last election.

CR used to be dominated by just 2 major parties the PUSC and the PLN, both of which were heavily tainted in previous administrations by widespread corruption. In 2002, Oton formed the the PAC party and has been its candidate in the last 2 elections. In just its 2nd presidential election in 2006, the PAC lost to Oscar and his PLN by a slim margin as you said (actually so close that it required a recount). However you left out a few important points:

1) Most of that PAC vote came at the expense of the other opposition party, the PUSC. If the opposition to the Arias was not so divided Solis would probably have won.

2) Opinion polls just days before the race showed Oscar Arias leading Oton Solis by over 10 points and probably many CR voters who might have voted for Solis may not have voted because they didn't think he had a chance. (BTW, ID, that just goes to show how wide the "margin of error" can be in these CR opinion polls, so I wouldn't put a huge amount of stock in what we're currently reading about Laura and Johnny)

3) Oton's main campaign issue at that time was NOT about any totalitarian measures, but rather railing against the CAFTA which was then being rammed through by Oscar Arias and his PLN party. It wasn't that he was opposed to free trade, but rather that he didn't like how heavily weighted CAFTA was towards the US (e.g. allowing the US to retain its agricultural import duties). I don't think CAFTA is really responsible for CR's current economic mess but, given the poor state of the CR economy, IMHO, Oton could play the "I told you so" card in the next round of elections and get a lot of mileage from it.

4) Solis's party is MORE conservative than the Arias's neo-liberal PLN party, so I'm not sure comparing him to Hugo Chavez and his pal Fidel is really a valid comparison. Actually, I think Arias is actually more sympathetic to Chavez than Solis would be.

BTW, if totalitarian means REALLY cracking down on CRIMINALS as opposed to trying to protect women by putting prostitutes out of work or making men guilty until proven innocent when accused of paternity or domestic abuse, then I think CR could use a little more of that form of totalitarianism instead of the misguided feminazi policies that have been pursued by tica politicians like Laura Chinchilla.

Sorry to interrupt this high faloutin political debate, but WHEN IS THE GENERAL ELECTION? I'm trying to plan a trip for next September and October and I don't want to buy non-refundable tickets to come to a place where mongering was outlawed. Even if the legislation doesn't move that fast (and it probably won't) she could still close down the MPs. She's already done it when she was only the VP!

First Sunday in February 2010. That is also Superbowl Sunday. CR election law prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages on that day which really puts a crimp in Superbowl parties at commercial establishments. There is a move afoot in the legislature to remove the ley de seca. So perhaps this Superbowl will be a wet one in more ways then one in 2010.

What I find very interesting about this whole topic, maybe it's just me, I actually know more about CR politics and the candidates than the US. Do you see how "the pink" can be a positive influence on a man :)

I haven't read the entire long thread, so sorry if this has already been covered.

Prostitution is a constitutional right in Costa Rica, and it would be extremely difficult for a constitutional amendment.

Never heard that one before. The conventional wisdom is that prostitution is not explicitly illegal or legal so therefore it is allowed at the present time but certainly subject to change. I would be interested where you read it is included as a right in the Constitution.

No, the law prohibiting sale of alcohol was repealed.
