I beg to differ. In some cities, such as Philadelphia, it goes for $2-$3.  I am sure that we get your point, though. :)

So I guess $10 gets you TLN?

One weekday, I was walking in the typical busy noon pedestrian traffic on Central near the Bank and then this tico came up from behind me and put his arm around my shoulder/neck and said "hey mi amigo" like we knew each other. My gold necklace or my back pocket was his/their next move, I presume.

I pushed him and yelled at him and he scooted.

That's one of the ways they do it in busy city scenes--make it look/feel like a normal interaction, get you mentally occupied and thus not sensitive to every touch/feel, and then grab & run; and not just in SJ--every busy urban scenario no matter what country.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Although I get a laugh out of some of the opinions of the instant experts. Two trips know it alls.

I have lived here for over 3 years and know San Jose quite well. I am a cautious person but taking risks in some areas makes lfe much more rewarding. But taking a risk on this subject is franky, foolish.

There are some areas of SJ that the police are afraid to enter. Leon 13 near Tibas is such an area. I know some of you big tough guys would go there at night walking etc....after all you guys have no fear. Take a walk there at night.

And I know most big american cities have bad areas but only a fool would go to them because there is no reason to. In SJ we are talking about el centro and alot of other areas. Parque central is famous for daytime muggings. And Nica park is very bad anytime of day.

And of course you are a target because you are a gringo. If a robber sees 100 people and one gringo who is he going to rob????

Of course a robber is like a predator , they carefully evaluate their target to minimize risk .

To each is own.

And dangerous.

Costa Rica has one of the highest highway mortality rates in the world.

The most dangerous place in Costa Rica is on the roads!!!!!

Many of the cab drivers here drive like absolute manics. The cars are tin boxes, good luck surviving a crash

FOR ALL YOU "BETTER SAFE THE SORRY ADVOCATES" _ DO NOT TAKE A TAXI - ROADS ARE VERY DANGEROUS - BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY _ THE PUBIC BUS IS MUCH, MUCH SAFER. At the very least, only ride in the larger sized vans.

Lets see how many of the "better safe than sorry" advocates support this safety measure. I expect very few.

Hey Orange is your current avatar Gene Kelly, daning in the rain? Or GR practicing a few new steps in preperation for Rio? :P

I witnessed a few wrecks in a taxi as well :P May be it's time for horse drawn carriages in SJ  I can see it now pull your lady out of DR/KL for a little romantic moonlit ride around the gulch area.

Ja bueno, mis dos colones…

I have been to Costa Rica for awhile, despite my ill picked handle years ago. Myself, I Hate every time I hail a taxi. I agree with the walking guy for the most part the cabs are crap for cars. I have seen all – failing breaks; die at every stoplight; fumes coming up into the cabin; door handle doesn’t work; stuck accelerators (turn off the key to slow down); beat to totally shit autos not to mention the men behind the wheel that drive like it is a video game they are out to win. All this in traffic (transito) that is a free for all and may the best man come out on top.

I have had truly enjoyable cab rides and related to the people behind the wheel. I have others from hell and been ripped off many colones before I got the hang of it and knew my way around. For any true Novice it is a Right of Passage. Over the duration maybe I’ve been beat outta $50. Heck that is an easy night at the casino.

Still, for some jaunts I’ll just as soon walk. BTW I am about Tico size. Like has been said - before anyone notice you are there and gone – faster than the cab could get you there. At least I have the control over my own destiny. If I have a plan I’ll call some one I know with a Van. I agree – Way Safer.

That said Newbies take the cab – you need to get the hang them of sooner or later
