Can a local CRTer confirm this:

Got my Sim card a couple of days ago at the ice office downtown and was told the program was set to expire last Saturday and the clerk said he was not sure about the future of the program. If you have your card now and keep buying a minimum of 2,500 colones refill each month you will be able to continue using the card and that number. If you let it expire and the program does not continue your sim/number will not function any more.

That would really suck, especially for those of us not in country with no way of renewing the card.

That really blows. I guess progress never last long in these parts of the world.

ICE may have run out of SIMs or available telephone numbers.

They are doing some network "upgrades" ( ) soon. All GSM users will have to cycle power (reboot) their phones after the upgrade. Also, they are offering to convert the remaining TDMA users to GSM. I have to think that this might all be related.

Someone needs to stop by the ICE booth at baggage claim in SJO to verify that the program is toast.

I was there on Sept 17th and tried to buy one at the ICE shop at the airport. I was told as of the week before, they were no longer selling them but she thought they might be available again in a week. Anyone know if they are available now?? Will be back down on the 29th and would like know the status.

They sell them at the airport. I just bought one this morning.

¢2,500 plus tax = ¢2,800 or 30 days.

They also have ¢5,000 and ¢10,000.

Thanks Orange.
Finally someone who could cut through all of the BS and check firsthand.

I'll be there late next week and will pick up another SIM. I'll see if the Novia can keep it active for me for a few months. I'll be back in Jan '10 if not sooner.

I also can confirm that yes, things are back to normal with ICE (I use that term loosely). I bought my SIM at the ICE kiosk in baggage claim, popped it into my phone, and it has been working like a champ since. According to the ICE rep I talked to, the temporary SIMs should be available without interruption for the foreseeable future. Mongering is so much easier with local mobile communications.

Right you are Angry. Normal for ICE.
It is nice to know, at least from this rep, that ICE is PLANNING to keep this program active.

Still no explanation as to why they shut down for a while. I would assume that it had something to do with the network switchover since they both occurred at about the same time. Let's hope that all of that BS is behind us.
