Ding! Ding! Winner! Puravidatransport hits the nail on the head.
Example and case in point: The movement of COSTCO to Maui in the early 1990's. Over and over the handwringers asserted "big box" would destroy forever the Hawaiian Mom and Pop joints. The sky was going to fall. The wicked and evil haole would destroy forever Aloha. Poppycock. Here is what ended up happening: The Mom and Pop shops buy their stuff from COSTCO and the mokes who don't want to leave their own little sector/neighborhood continue to buy from Mom and Pop at higher prices were they to leave the neighborhood, but which they don't want to do. It's just easier to send One Kanaka Boy two places down to pick up the six pack than it is to get in a car and drive five minutes to the COSTCO (and in many instances, drive 20 mins). That drive time cuts into the party time.
Costa Rica shall survive.

I'm thinking Wal-Mart won't be the death of mom-pop places for a while for the simple reason that the society in Costa Rica isn't as mobile as in the States. Many people, if not most, don't have the option or want to go through the trouble of going to the Wal-Mart owned supermarket since it may involve a long walk, bus ride, taxi etc... No telling for how much longer, but there will be a need for the local 'super' for a long time to come IMHO...
PS: MH, Very gracious offer on your part as well.....that is some FUNNY stuff!!!
