It simply means/implies..... "how's life?".. as in; what's up, what's going on, how's life...etc..

Paco, the expression "¡Ay, cómo es la vida!" is a pessimistic phrase that can be translated to "Things that life throws at you".

"tengo ganas de ti" is correct! There is a very famous song from the 80's by the Spanish singer Camilo Sesto "Hoy tengo ganas de ti". Besides the primary meaning similar to "I'm horny", it's a poetic and elegant expression. I think girls would like to hear that.
