Ok, here's a new one for ya: The Cigar Bar restroom at the White House in the hills above Escazu. As far as I know, Its the ONLY mensroom in Costa Rica where you piss on ICE!

That is definitely a high class bano. No paper towels or electric dryer...real fresh cloth towels provided to dry your hands.

I recall one place in Liberia where the mens room was a piece of plywood to stand behind.

A lot of the fine establishments I used to frequent in my youth did that. It takes care of the problem of people not flushing the toilet. The melting ice does it for them.

Speaking of baños. I still can't get over the fact that Ticos/as wipe their culos and throw the dirty toilet paper in a wastebasket.

I once asked a Tica why they do that, she replied: "we were taught in school that flushing paper is bad for the environment".

I would assume that plumbing system is Costa Rica can handle toilet paper. Or am I wrong?

The plumbing in CR is not by any means up to US standards and that is the reason for that practice. It is very common in local places and you will always notice a trash can by the toilet. rbc100

In many places the plumbing is installed with undersized pipes, as defined by more modern plumbing codes, that can not handle the paper. Ticos are use to putting the paper in a separate container located in the bano.

It is always a good idea to remember that there are various customs and procedures in foreign countries that differ from what you are use to in your home country.

They are different not wrong.

Speaking of banos, Ticos and different... I noticed a lot of Ticos/s don't practice washing there hands before they sit down to eat. I've seen these also after they went to the bathroom before sitting down at the table. I hate to see what's happening in the kitchen when you order a meal. :x And yes, i did flush the paper down the toilet at my novias house. :x She got mad at me. But then again what doesn't piss her off?

I grew up in Panama, and we didn't practice that custom.

I first traveled to Costa Rica when I was 9 years old with my parents. My sister lost her lunch when she went to the baño of the restaurant and saw dirty papers in the uncovered basket. Ahhhh, the good old times!

Ice in the urinals is not specific to CR. You can find plenty of taverns in Chicago that do the same thing, have seen this for years around town.

Ice in the urinals was a very common practice in the NYC taverns years ago. Have no idea why it was done or why it stopped.

I've always been under the impression that if you found Ice in the urinals, there was a pretty good chance you were in a "high class joint". I remember the the Oak Room bar in the Plaza hotel in New York had ice in the urinals.
