When I first moved to Costa Rica 3 years ago, I looked into opening a Hooter's here in CR, but the franchise fees where way out of my price range. My girlfriend and I went to Hooters for dinner last night, she's been pestering me about trying the chicken there for weeks, since she's known me for almost 2 years, and knew about the restraunt stuff. Anyway....
When you first walk into the place, the only thing that comes to mind is the noise. Holy shit is it loud in there. They having the music turned all the way up, the girls are loud and screaming, "Bienvenidos Hooters !", and they have 5 TVs all turned up for ESPN. This was an immediate turn-off, but hell, it's a sports bar (kinda).
We proceed to get a table, and grab the menu. I must admit there is one nice touch, the girls come over and have a seat at your table while you look through the menu, and chit-chat for awhile. This may be because it was only half-full, but I think it's a nice touch. We decided on 2 orders of Chicken Strips, with different hot sauces. For anyone that likes HOT sauce, Hooters is definitely not on the above average heat level, in case you were wondering(I had to get an extra bowl of 911, their hottest sauce). My girl being a typical Tica, chose the least hot, Medium, but she was still able to handle the 911 taste test(so it's NOT hot at all, cause 90% of Ticos, including her, can't even use black pepper). We both ordered fruit drinks(lemonade and orange juice). Here is the big surprise, just those 2 orders, with a side of regular fries, and it came to $20.00. Jesus ! This place is pricey to say the least !
The girls were nice, talkative, and most spoke english. We didn't meet any girls from Costa Rica, only from Columbia, Panama, Guatemala, Venezuala, and asian. Kind of a surprise(j/k), but all of them had silicon.
I don't think this place is going to make it too well, but I could be wrong. It's very expensive, and as previously stated, there are tits everywhere in this country. I think the 2 largest problems they will need to overcome are the 1) price (even rich ticos will step back on that) and 2) the fact that it is in the single most popular shopping center for gringo dining. The majority of gringos living in CR have wives, and they didn't want their husbands eating at Hooters in the US, you can be damn sure they don't want them eating at the one here, or seen by all their friends and neighbors.
All in all, we may or not go back, although I think I'll be visiting there with some friends who have never gone. I had my hopes up, but for some reason it just doesn't hold a candle to any of the other 7 locations I used to eat at. Maybe I'm just jaded, since I've been living in CR for 3 years... who knows...
