I would think that every rational thinking being would hope for that. The reality is not only is it a little much to ask in these times it has been unobtainable in the history of civilization.

Sad but true.

Seems to be a huge shortage of rationality in the history of man. Well, maybe not if you define rationality as "rationalizing" anything we want to do and finding justification for every selfish act we may want to perform. It could be construed that many of the worlds leading books that have changed history are huge rationalizations for improper human behavior. Some titles that come to mind..."Mein Kompf", "The Communist Manifesto", the "Koran", and yes, even THE Bible. What a frickin mess some of these writings and followings have caused...

Pardon my tainted and politically incorrect rantings...

TITLE: National Brotherhood Week
Lyrics and Chords

[ Abdim7 = ]

Oh, the white folks hate the black folks
And the black folks hate the white folks
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule

/ E B7 / - E / E7 A / B7 EE7 /

But during National Brotherhood Week
National Brotherhood Week
Lena Horne and Sheriff Clark
Are dancing cheek to cheek
It's fun to eulogize
The people you despise
As long as you don't let 'em in your school

/ A - / E - / B7 - / E E7 / A - / E - / B7 - EA EB7 EA EB7 /

Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks
And the rich folks hate the poor folks
All of my folks hate all of your folks
It's American as apple pie

But during National Brotherhood Week
National Brotherhood Week
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans
'Cause it's very chic
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can't stand
You can tolerate him if you try

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics
And the Catholics hate the Protestants
And the Hindus hate the Moslems
And everybody hates the Jews

But during National Brotherhood Week
National Brotherhood Week
It's National Everyone-Smile-At-
One-Another-hood Week
Be nice to people who
Are inferior to you
It's only for a week, so have no fear
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

Having lived here for a little over four months now, I haven't noticed as much dislike of the Nicas as has been written.

However, El Ciego's description of the class differences in this society-- which are initially subtle-- have struck me with shocking truth.

It's pretty incredible. I asked my neighbor yesterday about a certain bar that my taxi driver recommended... a regular neighborhood bar in Escazu Not a puta bar.

Her response was, "We don't go to places like that." Upon further questioning, it was because "they don't like to go to places where the riff raff hang out." My novia stated the same thing, "I don't go to bars with names like, "Snoopy's".

I find all of this amusing, as going to dive bars is almost considered a sport back in Austin. Not matter what your social background. At least if you're under 40.

Of all the "racism" or "prejudice" ... I have found the most pointed toward the Columbians... who many of the Ticos and Nicas seem to possess an outright fear of. Kind of like the mafia.

Mexico is just as racist as the United States if not more. The only differences is Mexico doesn't abide by the polical correctness that the US does. Your not looked down upon if you're open about the way you feel about other races. That's just how they are.

A few points:

-I would agree that Latin Americans discriminate more based on class than race, though there are cases of the latter.

-Nicaraguans aren't too fond of Costa Ricans either, though the intensity of the emotions is not on par with some costa Rican's feelings towards nicaraguans. Nicas view ticos as sissified and condascending, a view that is propably shared by other Central Americans. I would say this comes from two things: how CR plays soccer (falling on any contact) and how historically CR has set itself apart form the rest of the region (A "CR is too good for you"...which sometimes is trues).

-Nicas and colombians have a historical adversarial relationship over San Andres, which Nicaragua claims was stolen by the Colombians.

-Colombians speak a pretty version of Spanish, though the accent in some of the rural areas is annoying. Panamanians butcher Spanish. CR is okay, but they have plenty of unique words that no on else in the region uses. It will be interesting to see if regional TV helps converge the different words and accents acros Latin America, much in the same way TV in the US has smoothed the edges of regional accents.

Here in Chicago the whites on the Northside (Cub fans) talk about the whites on the Southside (Sox fans) in a condescending manner. They commonly refer to them as "white trash." The white trash on the Southside refer to the whites on the Northside as "faggots." And they never bother to take into account any social class level. It's always used in a blanket statement, from both sides.

In Chicago the Mexicans and Puerto Ricans are just that, not Hispanic. I don't know the reason, but you know how indiffernt "man" can be toward another "man."

I for one love all the women in CR, unlike the phat, heifer b*tches in America, especially in the Midwest.

Thanks Einstein, i do not care for the spanish lesson that you are trying to teach me here. NICO is what they are, NICO is a term that is used in Nicargua and Costa Rica. Go put NICO in the search bar of any search engine and you'll see what i am saying or go ask one :x

Superman,

I have never met you before and I was in no way trying to attack you in my post (which was over 6 months ago by the way). I am married to a Nicaraguan lady, I am fluent in Spanish, and I can all but guarantee you that I've spent more time in Nicaragua than you have. But if you use the word Nico you are speaking incorrectly, plain and simple. You can continue to say it however you like, me vale verga. But in Nicaragua the word Nico does not exist.

In the words of the immortal Rubén Darío, “Soy Nica, ¿Y Que?”

Sincerely,

Sandinista (orgullosamente)

Can varify with 99.9 percent certainty that Sandinista is correct.

TP,
Don't you like those corn-fed midwestern sweeties? I'm in Chicago a lot and the women are fine, for the most part.

You know here in the states if a person is one-fourth or less African-American they call themselves black! While in the Dom. Rep. its just the opposite! If a Dominican is a shade lighter than the many Haitian sugar cane cutters that live in the republic, then they call themselves WHITE! And like a earliar poster said the Dominicans really hate the Haitians! Over the years I have met many Haitians in the Republic and found most very hard working and honest! I have asked Dominician friends why they hate the Haitians, they all answer : BECAUSE THEY ARE SO BLACK! later

This is a good post. I'm a north sider; and, after 35 years of chasing p*ssy, I'm 99.999% sure I'm not a faggot.

In Chicago, the Mexicans and Puerto Ricans absolutely despise eachother. I live next to a neighborhood which is the intersection of Mexican and Puerto Rican gangs. It is a complete war zone. If you somehow transplanted those gangs into the middle of San Jose, it would be a complete blood bath. Not a single Tico would come out alive. And, people think SJ is not safe. Try certain neighborhoods in Chicago.
