This is an interesting thread.
Rolex had a valid observation, though to say AIDS is OVERBLOWN would definitely fall on the riskier side of the AIDS debate. OTOH, DonCanadian's reaction was also extreme. The point that Rolex, Slickwings and Ruffnutz were trying to make is that everything is a calculated risk. On one side you have total celibacy or a monogamous relationship (even that assumes she didn't catch something before you started the relationship that somehow escaped testing or she isn't lying to you about not screwing around) and on the other is having unprotected anal sex in gay bath houses. For most of us neither extreme is a practical or desirable alternative so we try to find our own happy medium somewhere between. Sometimes it is based on carefully calculated assumption of risk, sometimes it is based on anecdotal impressions or myths and sometimes it is just done without any real thought.
There will always be a health risk in our hobby and we should all take whatever reasonable precautions we can to minimize those risks and still enjoy ourselves. But we should also put those risks in perspective. The risk of HIV infection from anything short of unprotected genital-genital or genital-anal sex is much less than many other things we routinely do without a second thought.
As an aside on a related topic, there was an interesting thread on this board (which seems to have been deleted) on the possibility that the HIV/AIDS as an STD is a total misconception. If you are interested to hear that story, do a web search on "AIDS myth" or Dr. Peter Duesberg of UCal Berkeley. Personally, I don't know what to think of that, but people are dying from something and I don't see any point in taking unnecessary risks. So what is a monger to do?
There has been a lot of discussion on this board on the HIV/STD risk involved with BBBJ's but not nearly as much on DATY. There was one particularly informative post, which also seems to have disappeared, that had a link to a site which broke down the relative risk of various sexual practices for various types of STDS. Does anyone still have that link? Anyway, a quick search did turn up a few other informative links. In particular, Snooky posted a couple of links:
http://www.lgbthealthchannel.com/stdmsm/behavior.shtml (Snooky, what are you doing at gay sites

?) Covers everything from anal rimming to watersports but unfortunately doesn't really cover DATY.
http://www.dph.sf.ca.us/sfcityclinic/drk/oralsex.asp covers DATY and concludes there is likely not a high risk of HIV transmission from DATY - absolutely no cases have been documented.
Basically, the big HIV risk is in blood and seminal fluids. HIV in vaginal fluids or saliva is extremely low or non-existent and transmission of the virus through oral-genital contact has NEVER been documented - ie essentially zero risk. Where the real DATY HIV risk comes in is if she has any vaginal bleeding or is at or near her period or if any seminal fluid is down there from her last client (kinda makes you wonder about DFK too, doesn't it?).
BTW, it doesn't surprise me at all that many gringos ask for bareback sex (I think they're nuts) and it wouldn't surprise me at all either how many chicas give in to get the business or the extra dinero. Be careful out there guys.
Of course there are also other STDs (generally non-fatal). In terms of oral sex, the riskiest one is probably Herpes, which also happens to be uncurable. This risk can not be completely removed but a visual inspection for obvious sores goes a long way to cutting down the risk.
Here's my personal take:
1) Don't brush or floss beforehand (at least not immediately beforehand), but do keep breathmints handy to use instead.
2) Do a discreet finger swipe and sniff taste before going down there. No reason to get any unpleasant surprises.
3) Go in for a quick closer visual inspection before diving in (of course you can't see whats going on inside, which is another reason to keep the oral ministrations on the outside).
4) Never go down on high volume MP girls, at least not late in their work day.
5) I've never tried dental dams. I don't know why, maybe its just me but I feel pulling one out sends untrusting signals to the girl which can spoil the mood. Maybe if I learn to do it more discretely, like some of the girls can when they use their mouths to slip on a condom for a CBJ. Incidentally, I hear that a little piece of saran wrap works just as well as those commercial products.
6) No tongue probing. I leave that for my fingers and other bodily appendages. The girls seem to appreciate the clitoral-tongue stimulation the most anyway.
7) Do not generally go down on a girl with a lot of razor stubble. I'm not sure how much risk there is of microabrasions, but I just don't enjoy it as much.
8 ) Never sure whether to swallow or spit after I leave the MP. Though any damage has probably already been done by that point. I always go for a alcohol gargle as soon as practical afterwards - either at a bar or with a Scope gargle in my room.
HotLuck had a recent post that summed up most of the precautions to take before oral ops

This topic comes up often and usually turns into a heated debate. Get the info yourself, decide what your personal risk tolerance is and then go do those things. Have fun.
End of the day, if you're up at night with the "sweats", remorseful over things you have done the day before, readjust your behaviour.
It's no use having fun when you worried 'bout what's been done...
