In my experience there are 3 guys who do this:
1. Those who are getting played and too ashamed to admit it
2. Those who like playing rich guy and really don't care if they're getting played
3. Those (like I have been at times) who are actually playing the girl. Give her whatever money and gifts that you don't mind giving away, get her addicted to it like a drug, then use it as leverage. I don't do this much anymore except in special situations, but with the right girl you can get her to do ANYTHING as long you don't turn off the money flow. You do have to avoid emotional attachment (of course you don't let her know that) and realize that she will screw around behind your back every chance that she gets.
None of them are likely to reply to a thread of this nature.

Personally, I've seen a TON of guys in category 1, who
THOUGHT they were in category 3. In fact, after the guy who believes he has met the love of his life, those guys fill out the bulk of category 1. Inevitably, these situations usually end with the the chica flaking on them or screwing up their master plan for some reason and the guy complaining about how "stupid" she was to screw up such a great opportunity.
Now that I think about it, I have actually seen more of THIS than the guy who falls in love with a chica.
