The chief draw if you are not giving financial security would be that you're an anomaly. Let's say I'm a (probably bored) 23 year old finishing my college education to be a kindergarten teacher, or whatever.
I live with my family and so have my past boyfriends. I watch American movies and see American tourists walking around the street, but almost never have talked to any. I have nothing else going on this week so I will feel flattered even with a somewhat older American guy's attention.
For every one girl like this there are probably a lot saying things about you in Spanish that you'd wince to hear. Luckily they're usually polite enough here to not say those things to your face. On the one hand, why should you care about that? On the other hand... how long do you plan to stay in the country and do you really want to be known as a (non-paying) sex tourist?
Good luck finding women/ a woman who you can really enjoy being with, someone who shares your interests, points of view, etc. I'm not being sarcastic, either : )
As far as keeping girl's attention, I understand you don't want to give them money, and that's smart since it cheapens people's feelings for you, but it would be hard to go wrong to invite a girl you like to some kind of fun adventure trip, the kind of thing they always hear about tourists doing but never do themselves.
Good thought about the mystique to the older american. But it appears his strategy isn't focused on the 23 yo. He's accepted the 30 something, which they are in their prime and need action also. So, I disagree it's not luck. Obviously, this guy has his plan, smartly follows and I'm guessing has a decent personality. Looks and money are only two factors, personality and the chica's "needs" for getting something large between her legs that's not plastic also plays a role.
Summary: keep going! Great strategy. : )

I have learned to laugh it off... because her parents house is just a few upgrades from a chicken coup. It might be clean. But, then, I used to have a salaried maid that cleaned well.
