I saw some dude trying to pay his money @ the airport today to extend his visa. The people there had no idea what he was talking about. If it's all about the money, they're not doing a very good job collecting it as of yet. I'm not sure how his situation turned out, I made it through the mile long security line before he was done.

No one has ever accused government – any government – of being efficient or effective. The last effective bureaucracy was found only in the mind of Max Weber circa 1922.

This was posted on a Yahoo group discussion board. Ryan Pierce of ARCR is not know to spread unfounded rumors so if the person who posted this is accurately quoting him it would seem the government is serious about cracking down on perpetual tourists.

Quote:

In a conversation with Ryan Piercy of ARCR yesterday(April 9)at the ARCR First Friday, he mentioned that since the first of March they (arcr) has seen several (8) instances where CR Imigracion has asked persons returning from out-of-country (perpetual tourist) trips if they had applied for residency? When the answer was "No" they were informed that they would be granted A 30 DAY VISA THIS TIME and, if they had not filed their residency application by the next time they tried to enter, THEY WOULD BE DENIED ENTRY.

He added that this message has been given at the Nicaraguan and Panamanian borders AND the San Jose Airport.

If you haven't, it appears that NOW is the time to get into action!

I will be leaving CR on Tuesday for a week to satisfy my 90 day out. I will report back as to what they do to me when I return. (I hope I don't get a beating)

if there are three pure types of political leadership, domination and authority, as argued by the aforemention Max Weber in his "magnum opus Economy and Society (1922)",

1. charismatic domination (familial and religious),
2. traditional domination (patriarchs, patrimonalism, feudalism), and
3. legal domination (modern law and state, bureaucracy)

where would we put today's Costa Rican bureaucratisation of society?

If one were to show up at the gates of CR in Jesuit garb, would Laura give a free pass?

Or, what of the Fool Slayer?... would not some sort of traditional accord be granted?

I am guessing that for $14.75, the last of the 3 may be obtained and entry to Pairofdice granted....for true Justice is Blind and sees with the Mind (the dollar in mind that is)

...as I stated earlier, I was given a 30 day visa for my February, 2010 trip. There was no discussion; and I didn't notice it was 30 days until well into my visit when I was looking for reading material.....others might want to begin looking at how many days they're being given.

...now some of that 30 day non-sense for me MAY have been because I had requested the twunt at SJO to please also hand stamp my color copy for me to carry around. She called over a "supervisor" who explained passport copies are not to be stamped; this, despite the fact I have had the color copy hand stamped 4 other times and so showed him. Big deal....*shrug*

I hate to say it, but it's kind of a jackass move to argue "But these other guys have stamped my passport copy before". The reason is that a) It can get those immigration agents in trouble, therefore ensuring they will never do it again, and b) makes it more likely the supervisor will make a stink about it to others and not allow them to do it. So by arguing that, you're actually making it HARDER for anyone else to get stamps on their copies in the future.

Still, to keep on topic...

I just arrived from the USA last week at SJO. I have about 20 exits over 3 years on my passport. I'm definitely in the "Perpetual Tourist" category. The immigration agent asked me how many days I was staying, and I said 90. He gave me a 90 day visa. I think they are giving 30 day visas by default.

ahhh, the dreaded costa rican airport twunt......once endangered, now (due to nica overbreeding) found in all positions of authority....best dealt with by looking them disarmingly in the eye and proffering chocolate in ones hand.

Lest try to put this in perceptive.

This information, that was posted on a Yahoo discussion board, said that there were 8 reported incidents of perpetual tourists being given a 30 day visa and told that the next time they would be denied entrance if they had not filed for residency. That is 8 reported incidents to ARCR from March 1 to April 9 or about one every five days and perhaps a few more that they are unaware of. Common sense would tell you that a lot of perpetual tourists entered the country between March 1 and April 9 with absolutely no problem.

Like many things in Costa Rica what happens is determined by the person who makes the decision. It is like the border check point at Sixola. Very few people have a problem unless they are unfortunate enough to be in the line staffed by the female agent and she is having a PMS day. Then watch out.

The thing that should be taken from this thread is that you might never have a problem but that is no longer a given like it has been in the past.

My perception of what Steven1 said was that he requested they stamp the copy; I didn’t read it as if he argued. Maybe I am wrong.

You know, nearly all of the laws and policies in Costa Rica change frequently and perhaps the gatekeeper-girl at immigration didn’t know she could stamp the passport copy.

That said, I agree with you Mad G it is not wise to argue with someone in their own house. Bureaucratic b*tt phucking  can be brutal.
