The most affected areas are located in the provinces of Alajuela, San José, Cartago and Heredia, as well as in areas like Guapiles and Caribbean communities, but the quake was felt throughout the country but with different strength.

According to reports from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), the tremor would have had a magnitude of 6.2 and have its epicenter 10 kilometers east of San Pedro de Poas, Alajuela, at a depth of 30 kilometers.

In that area there was another earthquake last Wednesday, January 7 and had a magnitude of 4, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) declared a red alert in the provinces described.

Security minister, Janina Del Vecchio said in conversation with Telenoticias ordered police control to maintain order and coordinates with the different aspects of public security delegations.

For its part, Karla González, Minister of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) warned that in different places have been reported some failures in domestic routes in Alfaro Ruiz and that the road to the Poas Volcano is partially closed.

It also reported that Juan Santamaría International Airport remained closed for a general inspection, but it is working normally.

Just heard on ch 7 that there are more than 1000 tourists trapped with no way out in the Vara Blanca area. The head of the tourist bus company said there were several buses blocked in with no way out.

Still plenty of aftershocks, though nothing like the original. We had a pipe break on our water heater and some things fell off shelves, most lamentably a new bottle of ranch dressing, which currently decorates the kitchen floor (unless my cleaning girl has got it cleaned up now). I'm up on the 5th floor, so we felt it pretty strongly. They can tell me it was Poas all they want, I still suspect BKtuna.

Luckily Bilko's cleaning girl was on call to handle the ranch dressing spill. No word from our man on the ground Lee at the King Hotel- apparently shaking on the 6th floor balcony was too much for him so he ran down to the lobby to look at chicas and drink some rum. Hopefully the entire hotel won't come crashing down on top of him. More as this story develops...

Never thought I'd appreciate sedate & calm Los Angeles so much - stay safe all.

Rock 'n goes on.

Just had another one. Very small but noticeable. I'm pleased to report all the plants on the balcony are safe. I just came upstairs from the lobby completely unable to make a selection because I just cannot find anything that compares to the blonde from last night. I hate lowering my standards once thay get that high.

It occurred to me that, were you in the saddle while the quake hit, you would get a most memorable ride (provided you were not bucked off). I guess there is a good side to everything.

A crack appeared in the exterior walls of an office building downtown occupied by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad.

The main highway, Ruta 32, between San José and Guápiles was reported closed with motorists stranded between slides. A bus from the Caribbean was trapped, too.

Some English students visiting the Poás volcano were reported safe in the late afternoon after having lost contact for hours. Telephone lines were swamped.
