Any additional news on the immigration changes or any insight as to why they are being so irrational? I am sure it is not irrational from their point of view.

Too bad they don't get it: when you shit in your own mess kit dinner is going to taste pretty bad.

Interesting comments from the letters to the editor on page 2 of the am costarica today. The answer to why they are doing this is that they feel like it. They started out by scaring the shit out of we "perpetual tourists" by saying that we couldn't stay in the Country for more than 180 days/year.Now they have reversed themselves and are going after those ex-pats who have gone through the tedious task of applying for residency. those who have it will have to qualify under the new regs. when they are up for renewal just like new applications. It doesn't seem to matter to the powers that be,that ex-pats for the most part contribute more to the CR economy than do the Ticos and Ticas, without taking most anything. Luck4,the $100 penalty for overstaying your visa by 1 month appears to be part of the "final"bill which could reach the Legislature next week (UNLESS they are busy playing with themselves.

It appears that the cash flow from the US and Canada to Costa Rica is diminishing. One of the factors is the reduced inflow of tourist dollars based on the worldwide recession. Tourism is one of Costa Rica’s major economic sectors.

Another strong sector is the cash flow of US and Canadian citizens who reside in Costa Rica. There are an estimated 50,000 of us. Some of us have a greater income than others and subsequently spend more than others. Let’s say that it averages out at $2000 per person (not per household) per month.

That calculates out to $1,200,000,000 (one billion, two hundred million dollars). That is a very big sector of the Costa Rica economy. It's influence on the overall economy will be significant because the CR economy relatively small by comparision. Creating disinstentives to the inflow of dollars in this small economy will likely have serious negative effects.

Perhaps it benfits the ruling-propertied class.

There is only one reason why CR would stiffen residency requirements.

They want fewer gringos in live here. They tend to blame others for their problems, nicas for stealing, colombianos for violence etc....

Seems like some bozo politicians appealing to a xenophobic nativist Socialist base without considering the consequences. What they want is the seriously upscale part-time resident who's tucked away out of sight. What they'll get is...nobody. I agree with the economics of what we inject into their economy---Maserati might make more money per car but Toyota makes more total money, and without the Toyota drivers, you don't have Maserati drivers either. Residency is a continuum even though cut up into strata.

It is so perplexing because what they are doing seems to be so illogical, unreasonable and certainly counter to their best interests. It makes me think we are not seeing something which to them is obvious.

I think that is certainly a part of it, Bilko. But even at that, to cut off your nose to spite your face is so bone-headed.

I suggest give the Ticos what they want. Let all the gringos leave for other primes spots (Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Brazil, even Mexico again) and let them have their country back. They can all then continue their incestuous relationships among themselves and go back to picking bananas and coffee beans...and riding donkeys to work and back. This is basically where their erratic and lunatic thinking and actions are taking them.

I even timidly put Panama on that list because they have recently passed some similar bullshit immigration policies as well.

Well, okay, but if this means I have to return to the USA, I demand nice weather all year round, cheap cost of living and friendly affordable women. What? Not possible? Maybe this plan has a flaw in it. I'll email it to Alan Greenspan to check out.

"...an email to Alan Greenspan..." Mr. "Irrational Exuberance"? Like what we feel when we're going to CR the next day?

Bilko...I dont think I would ever suggest returning to the USA. I am only making a point about other destinations besides CR if they continue to tax and place unreasonable demands on their golden goose gringo crowd. Pure and simple.
