I'm newly dating a morena (black girl) from Limon in CR. So far, I sense zero discrimination. When I walk down the street with her, no one gives us a look. She is actually proud of her skin color. When I call her mi negra bonita, she responds with a warm smile. I, for one, don't really see any discrimination. However, I have seen the discrimination between ticas, nicas and colombianas. It seems to me that skin color is not the issue in CR, but country of origin.

Think you will find that is true world wide. From the southwest... Mexicans, to New York...Puerto Ricans, to South Fl...originally Cubans now Hispanics & Haitians to France, Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain etc. The discrimination is on country of origin and is rooted in economics.

Very good point Irish has made. It is more the characteristics that come with people than color but sometimes color or certain features are used to point a finger at it. :( Human beings seem to need a whipping boy in life to blame their problems on. (MAKES THIM FEEL GOOD LIKE SUPERIOR   ) Sometimes it maybe just other times not.

Discrimination in Costa Rica is more class-based than race-based.

I know a lot of the black basketball players in the CR basketball league, and my guess is that they would conclude the same thing. Yes, every once in a while there will be some prick shouting stuff, but in general it's not the same issue as in the US.
There is a sentiment that things are looking up for blacks in CR. Call centers and other bilingual jobs are a huge opportunity for them and plenty of Limon folk have come to San Jose to take those spots.
