Irish Drifters theory is seriously flawed if we are talking a comparision in dollar prices. This theory may be true based on the inflation rate of the colone but the US inflation rate has been much lower than the Costa Rican currency inflation rate. Bottom line, based on all the options availble in San Jose $40 and lower with excellent quality to be found . $100 is very expensive.I find anywhere you have the masses of tourists shop you pay and excessive price. My best advice along with Bilko as well as Floria is think outside the gulch.rbc100

Not the issue. What was the price in those places in 1992?

Unfortunately I have only been visiting between two and three years but price increases in local palces have been in line with Costa Ricas inflation rate when paying in colones during that time. The real point of my post was that the Costa Rican inflation rate has been far higher than the US infaltion rate so if talking dollar prices $100 is very expensive compared to outher options or $25 in 1992. I would venture that prices in local places are much more in line with the US inflation rate when converting to dollars than scenes in the gulch where prices have been inflated by tourist dollars.rbc100

By definition they are Tico places geared to the Tico economy. It makes no sense to say they are more geared to US inflation rates rather than CR inflation pressures. Tico places should have little, if any, interest in the conversion rate of tourist dollars to colones. They are Tico places, catering to Ticos, being payed in colones, spending those colones in the local market, which do not give two hoots about the US inflation rate but are very aware of the purchasing power of the colon.

One thing we can agree on:

This is a heck of a lot less (and more believable) than the original $188 figure. This means I would have been paying around $30 - $35 range (and not $5) in 1992 when compared to today's $.

One thing I believe is that estimates of 3% inflation for Costa Rica are ridiculously low. I would guess that Irish Drifter's figures are closer to correct.

Wow...you guys really have me confused, now! I'm still trying to figure out whether the $40 - $50 I'm paying in 2006 is consistent with market pricing!

Based upon my personal experience, I'm inclined to agree with RBC...there are some very good bargains to be had at $40 and less (although they may not get a unanimous certified "10" CRT stamp of approval).

El Ciego perceives:

2. Remember that many girls in the bars have either no place to stay or at best a crappy roach motel in which to spend the night. Your jacuzzi suite at the Presidente, even your clean, cozy, no-frills room at the Castillo will seem like the Ritz to her; TLN should be no problem at no additional cost, if you catch the right kitten at the right time of the night. "Quisiera desayunar desnudo contigo" (I (would) want to have breakfast naked with you) is a phrase to use with Miss Right for all night. Remember that the ones who have no family commitments may still dread the long bus/cab ride home and will want to stay with you simply for convenience, or only a few extra bucks.

El C,

You are right on with this one! I recently enjoyed a TLN with a chica from Quepos (who I picked up at the NY Bar) for the price of some nachos from the SL Bar. It was late...the last bus to the beach left....she needed a place to stay...and was a little hungry. The chica was not in the 9-10 range, but probably closer to a 5. In the morning, we both came out ahead...we both got what we needed!

The standard rate the chicas asked was about 3500 colones (roughly $25.00 in those days).

Yes the inflation rate is different, but you should compare apples with apples.

3,500 colones in todays colones is about 12,500 (257 percent increase)

$25USD then is about $36 now (44 percent increase)

Don't make the mistake of applying the colone inflation rate to the US Dollar.

No Cien.
