I've have had Jose walk with me at night a few times. If the beggers even start to come towards you, he on them. He's a honest guy making a couple of bucks. It cheaper to take a cab but if you in the mood to walk a couple of bucks is worth it.

The problem with gun, knife, pepper spray, etc... Is that in most cases, the bad guy has the element of surprise on his side. You cannot draw your side arm if a bogie already has his gun on you.

To further complicate matters, there's a high likelihood that-- if they've got he jump on you-- they might end up taking you $1k gun, as well as your money.

Plus, let's not forget that you're in a foreign country-- even if you have your residency-- and I can almost guarantee you that the morning headlines in the Nacional are going to read, "Foreigner shoots local boy."

As for hiring security/*******... I don't know why it can't be done under the guise of a neighborhood watch program... with ******* walking German Shepherds and Rottweilers. The latinos here have an over-abidiing fear of dogs-- especially after that Nica was mauled ot death, last month.
