If that is the case, he'll be there for at least another year. The current US administration will not do anything unless it furthers their agenda. Just look at the Army guy who was jailed in Mexico in 2014 because he made a wrong turn at the border. The federal government did not do anything to get him released. Compare that to what they did to get the Army deserter out of Afghanistan.
Backwards country we live in, lets negotiate terrorists for a deserter, makes sense.

You are so correct. This country makes hero's out of someone that can throw a ball, catch a pass, hit a baseball, hit a golf ball, dribble a ball. To the point of us getting hourly updates on a former basketball player that spent three days in a brothel high on many different drugs and overdosed. He spent $75,000 dollars in three days.
Yet we have thousands of troops killed or severely injured making $30,000 dollars a year hardly get any media at all.
