Social programs are in place here that are helping needy families. Not great but nobody is starving. After a month of declining active cases today saw a slight increase. The numbers should now fluctuate with days of slight decline and days of slight increase. With the relaxing of many restrictions a slow increase would not be unexpected. Social distancing exists on some levels and is ignored on others. We should see in the next couple of weeks how effective the restrictions are working. Don't expect to get down here anytime soon. They do not plan to open the beaches to the locals until August and then on a restricted basis. A huge part of tourism here is the beach hotels.

American Airlines is going to start selling tickets to Havanna, beginning with a depart date of June 6.
The Cubans have not committed to opening up for travel

If many if not all of the changes go into effect, the leisure travel market is going to take a huge hit.

All of this means extra costs, that will be passed along to the traveler in one form or another

The CR government is considering a big reduction of IVA, the sales tax. Also, possibly reducing entrance an exit taxes. I have read reports of competitive airline pricing.
I booked a round trip in July SJO to florida that was cheap.
I believe hotels here will be cheap. Costa Rica will be a popular destination as corcid 19 here is under control.
I am very optimistic and look forward to good business.

A month ago, I could have purchased round trip from Houston for Labor Day weekend for $265 with no change or cancel fees on United. I guess I missed my opportunity, because now they are $865 for the same time frame. That's $300 more than I have ever paid before. Guess I'll be using miles until things even out.

The airlines would be foolish to offer up cheaper airfares at this time. They have millions if not billions of flight credits out there in the market that have an expiration date. Why give somebody a longer trip now or maybe even two trips compared to when they bought the original ticket, your operating costs are going to be higher now, and you may be forced to operate at a decreased capacity.
Jet fuel on the spot market may be cheaper but many of the airlines have long term contracts for most of their fuel.
Some may want to jump start the market by offering a cheap fare, I wouldn't, and I would not be offering many direct flights to CR from my non hub locations until the demand is back. Funnel all your Costa Rica traffic through MIA/FLL until the non hub cities can support direct flights. No sense flying a plane 1/4 full from MIA and another one 1/4 full from ATL at the same time.
There may be some pent up demand initially with people wanting to return home, why discount fares to people who are willing to travel at nearly any cost, then again airlines aren't known for making the smartest pricing decisions and many have gone under for various reasons long before this virus.

I'm amazed that anyone is expecting to be able to fly to CR especially from the USA any time soon. Someone mentioned that they may open up when they get their Covid under control. So if they get it under control are they going to open their airspace to people from places where it is not at all under control?

With that in mind I'm thinking it will not be all that soon, although I would love to get down there.

Just like in Nature.. only the strong/adaptable will survive. As bad as this current situation is..(I believe it was the very same before) I think most people really have only 2 choices. It reminds me of one of my most favorite movie lines (quotes) "GET BUSY LIVING... OR GET BUSY DYING" ("that's god damn right").. The Shawshank Redemption

I bought a round trip sjo to mco 2nd week of July Spirit. The price was normal.
Costa Rica will open up to tourists. It represents 9.6% of their gnp.
I believe June 15 it will open.

On June 15, Carlos Alvarado will click the heels of his ruby brogues together three times while whispering "There's no place like Costa Rica" and the borders will magically open easier than Karen's thighs.

Fantasies and wishes are essential items.

I sincerely hope you are right, but I think that Karen’s thighs have a much higher probability.
