This might have already been mentioned, but I didn't want to go back and read 11 pages of this thread.

If you're really concerned about your "stamps", just take 10 minutes out of your schedule, grab your passport and walk over to Avenida Central. Go into the little print shop that's "catty-corner" from the Presidente. It costs 1200 colones to get a small laminated color copy of your passport and entry stamp. It takes about 5 minutes, and you're done. And the entry stamp that I received was reddish-pink and very legible.

I always bring a colour copy with me and ask immigracion to stamp it as well [which they've always gladly obliged] place it along with my airline ticket in a plastic [1 quart] zip lock freezer bag. therefore if any jackballs ever stop and question your status - end of story.

This past trip, Feb. 18 - - -March 3, Immigration REFUSED to stamp my color copy. I attribute this refusal to the fact there was a long line (I've never seen the line THAT long....); was fairly late at night (9:30pm); and the fact the agent was rather youthful. Flat out refused despite my polite request(s). Told me it was forbidden. I explained the Policia liked an original stamp and he told me to photo copy it...that that was the rule. 1st time ever having the stamp request turned down.

Have been postings over the years about Immigration stamping copies of your passport. Most seem willing but a few refuse. For some reason most of the posts stating that the agent refused the request the agent was female.

It certainly is worth a try as an actual stamp removes the possibility that the policia may think you copied the entry stamp of someone else (it has been done) who arrived more recently then you.

I asked the agent my last two trips to stamp a copy I had brought with me and was refused, told to have a copy made, which I did at my hotel, for free. For what it's worth both were male. Maybe it's just me but I've been refused a stamp by male and female agents.
