I have been travelling for years to CR and in the last 2 years the tourism business here is just exploding. Try to get a room at the Presidente or DR during high season last minute.
It's not just kooks like us. I see a lot of older folks touring around SJ (they are sort of like little ducklings following the mother duck)
Wouldn't be hilarious if the guide took them into the DR for a tour.
Imagine the looks on the faces of the little old white haired ladies when they see the chicas. Seriously, this type of tourist was rare in the past.

You always had your tree huggers, fishermen and surfers. I expect more regular tourists to discover CR in years to come.

That is exactly what happened when 6 or 7 women ranging in age from 50-70 came strolling through the BM one afternoon while I was sitting with a couple of other CRT VIPS's (BobM and Sluthog) in early January '05....

Wish I had a camera for some of the looks that were cast our way......
Needless to say they did not stay long.....

I think KC is correct, more and more tourists all the time....
