I must be missing something here , I understand that when you are outside your native country , you are a " guest " of the host country. Respect their laws and customs. These codes of conduct , I would think are for 19 year old military types on their first shore leave.

I'm sure it was posted in good intention , but anyone who already didnt adhere (sp?) to this , would they even be on this board ? And even if they were , would they even listen to it ? Don't know , but you gotta be a pretty loose cannon to stray outside of this.

I always feel like it is best to treat the locals better than we expect to be treated. Culturally in the US we tend to rush around and not have much in the way of social graces, at least where I live in the SF Bay area it's the norm. Many other cultures place more value on courtesy than we do, things like telling a store keeper "thank you" as you leave the store, things we normally don't do in the US. What we see as just being normal, the ticos may see us as being a little "coarse" and rude when seen from their perspective. And we are in their home, their parks and beaches, and with their ladies. It's not too hard to treat the locals nicely. Part of it all is just slowing down and taking some time as you go, no need to rush here since we are mostly all on vacation and just phucking around.

The other thing that I see that always stupifies me is some tourists that insist that everyone here speak perfect english. Even if you only know "hola" and "como esta" and one or two other greetings, your experiences here will go way up just greeting people in their language. Just about all of us should be able to get out a few simple phrases in spanish, it's not that hard to learn. My spanish is now maybe low intermediate, I can go days without english (and enjoy it) and my experinces with the chicas has gone exponential since I can talk to them in spanish. And the chicas are usually easier to understand, they speak more clearly than most guys do anyway.

Good reminder El C,

I am seeing more and more young and more obnoxious guys here than ever. Even some at the SL lately.

The two biggest correlations seem to be:

1) Alcohol consumption
2) Age
3) International travel experience

I try to be courteous when in the USA, and more courteous elsewhere. It amazes me that guys over 30 can not handle their liquor and behave just a little.

Great post. Rules to live by anywhere. I try to befriend everybody I come into contact with wherever I am, sometimes a beligerent ass will make that impossible. The best thing to do is move on & let him waller in his own waste. I also always treat the chicas as respectful as possible, It works wonders.
