That is beyond unfortunate and by reading the comments, I feel terrible for his grieving family, Godspeed. Reminds me of the adage, "nothing good happens after 2 am." I know we all have enjoyed late night partying, but after watching a fight break into gunshots outside of the DR, seeing drunk mafiasos get into it in MDE, I try to get in by 1 am. The mixture of bad hombres, intoxication, lack of respect for human life, lack of fear of retribution/consequences, thrown in with hot chicas, it's a factor for me.

I'm not ringing the alarm, but CR seriously has a homicide problem this year that I have not seen before. Seems as despair and hopelessness has hit an all time high which breeds desperation and desperate acts.

Thanks BB, the comments were exactly what made me start thinking it might be someone I know. If it who I think it is then the police need to look at his wife as being involved. As soon as they release the wifes name I will know if it was him. If it starts with an L then I will be contacting the police with some other names of people to look for as possibly being involved in a set up.

Wow! Seems like most info in tico times article might be inaccurate or altogether erroneous. But agree with comments by posters...Jaco is toast, done! Back to the good ol' gulch...

Keep in mind that they simply repeat what was in the police initial report.

And the hooker was his secretary?

I can we all agree that it went down differently than it was reported.

I agree with the person who hypothesized that the dealer was the hooker's boyfriend and when the deal went bad, he tried to get her out of the taxi, and gringo tried to be a hero/tough guy and got himself killed over a puta.

And I agree with Capt that nothing good happens after midnight, 2am, 4am, etc. It's when the bad guys are out in the streets. I tend not to be out in the streets at those times. If I'm up at the time, then it's in the room, or inside a strip club (until the sun rises  ), but not in the streets.

Bottom line... no matter what he was doing and with whom, nobody deserves to be shot and killed over relatively petty stuff like this. Condolences to his family.

I was in Jaco late last night and there was a heavy police presence downtown. I got stopped at a checkpoint as I was leaving so asked what happened. The Tico Times matched what I was told, but according to this guy, the chica 'insulted' the drug guy who then got upset and started fighting with her. The victim got involved and the fight escalated to gunfire.

As for the why...who knows. It could be any number of things. The last expat murder was by his wife's live-in boyfriend. There have been murders over legitimate and/or illegal business involving gringos. Or, this could be what it seems to be...being in the wrong place at the wrong time when a drugged up nut takes offense and starts shooting. It happens too often in Latin America it seems.

What I can tell you is the police here get serious about crimes in tourist areas. The presence in downtown Jaco last night around midnight was an obvious display of force. The OIJ is a professional organization and I'd bet we will see an arrest fairly quickly. The officer I talked to said the focus now in Jaco was on drugs and weapons and they sure checked my car out.

I live in Jaco and it has become progressively dangerous, especially near Le loft. Many drug dealers hang out there late at night. Why they are allowed to stay there baffles me. Yes, this guy was flirting with disaster and he paid the price but Jaco needs to clean this city up. There was a murder at the Monkey bar several years ago and it closed them down. There seems to be not much information shared on this incident, perhaps hush money from bar owners. Yes many different stories, I heard he picked the puta up from another bar and took her to leloft and the party continued. That is not a particular busy night here. Why could security not watch him a little closer. Sad one lost a life from a poor decision. Advice from one that lives here. If you get a chica take her to your place and under no circumstances take her to any bars!! They all have a real boyfriend here and trust me they hate us. Be careful

Well said Bennett.

It does happen all over though. Years back a coworker had dinner at a restaraurant in what I'd call a fringe part of town. He was getting in his car and a couple thugs aporoached and robbed him... then according to witnesses he slung an insult at the thugs. He bled out in the parking lot from a gunshot.

Jaco, San Jose, Medellin, Topeka, or Timbuktu. Does not matter - be careful because the worst can happen.

seems as if the ticos are getting very jealous here. Big fight over girl at mancave a few days before over a tica. Why do the club owners let them hang out with the gringo paying tourist? Really i love jaco but it truly is much much more dangerous than meets the eye. Anyone can be in the wrong place here at wrong time. You are simply feet away from someone that does not care about human life! That scares me!!

Book your room at Cocal, eat and drink at Cocal, catch your fish at Cocal...and grill and eat your catch at Cocal! Forget roaming around the late hour places like Orange Pub or LeLoft...not worth the risk

Go to the beach and do your souvenir shopping during day and early evening hours :|

Sounds like phucking paradise! Trapped in an expensive hotbox with, ironically, cold as ice chicas.

Sounds like Costa Rica needs President Duterte from the Philippines. He is going around killing all drug dealers and users - no questions asked. Got the people so scared they are turning themselves over to the Police so they don't get killed.

Well if you are going to visit jaco, i suggest the atv tour during the day. It is fantastic!! Go to the beach and have all your fun during the daylight hours.
To stay at Cocal is not a bad idea if you are here for pay to play. Unfortunately i agree that to leave there with a chica is bad news and possibly dangerous! Not that it does not happen every night y many times.
You guys that visit jaco- next time notice all the ticos(men of costa rica) standing around the street by Cocal or sitting in cars. They are waiting on the girlfriend or wife to make some money. Now usually this causes no issues but then throw drugs in the mix or she gets a nice looking gringo then you have possible issues. I was there one night and a gringo had made his choice of chica and decided to walk to another bar with her, he unknowingly walked past her real boyfriend and he touched her ass. The boyfriend went ballistic and pulled a knife!
I agree that its hot as shit and expensive in Cocal but its all we have!! Come here and have fun, serve your purpose but do not play with fate!!
I am fortunate that i have many contacts and phone numbers- i simply call and they come to my place.
Good luck guys- be safe!!!
