My dad worked as a mechanic for Pan Am so we flew everywhere when I was young. It was usually a choice of the filet mignon or chicken teriaki. The alcohol flowed and the stewardesses were fetish quality. I grew up and never looked back with my babysitter in Helsinki Finland in 1970 when the folks were out partying. Now we get a bag of peanuts...

People used to also dress-up to fly because it was considered a privilege. The times certainly have changed.

Spot on. Flying was indeed a privilege. I can remember as a K*D having rows of 3 seats entirely to myself, genuine sterling silverware with meals and menu's printed on linen paper (and THAT was in economy class). Besides the fact that back in the day you didn't have Gorda/Obese stewardesses constantly crashing into you as they walked up and down the aisle. Nowadays flying is like taking your local bus. Times indeed have changed.

Puravidatransport,

Regarding SWA pricing it is almost to the dollar what Spirit is charging from IAH later this month.
Except, of course, you get free bags on SW along with other perks.
Do you have any information concerning flight scheduling for SW?

It will be interesting to see how UA responds. I would pay more for UA than Spirit from IAH and SW from Hobby (not a convenient airport for me) but not very much more.

Did a quick search on the SW site (dates used: 11-5 to 11-12) and got 8:10 PM departure out of Houston with an arrival in San Jose at 11:50PM. Return leaves at 9AM and arrives Houston 12:50pm. Total price with fees/taxes and two free bags was $295.33! Certainly not the best schedule but what a price...half of what I've been seeing the last few months!

Looked at the fare calendar and they only offer that price on weekdays. Fri-Sat jump up over $100 a leg and Sunday is about $75 more than the weekday legs.

The schedule seems to be one where Southwest can get passengers to Houston from around the country for the flight out and back into Houston early enough to get them home the same day.

I wouldn't have any problem flying on SW and the new terminal in Hobby was designed as an international terminal and will be brand new (under construction now). Might be a much easier entry than in that madhouse IAH. Sure this will put pressure on UA to reconsider the $600 price point.
